Overnight Ripoffs
D'Amato Reveals Price Increases Do Flips At Local Supermarkets
Hempstead Town Supervisor
Al D'Amato today called for a
public hearing to determine the
need for regulations prohibiting
the multiple" price increases
slapped on a product already
sitting on a supermarket shelf.
"Many of these supermarkets,"
explained D Amato,"
are changing the prices on goods
now on the shelves several times
a week, sometimes daily. I
shopped within the shadows of
Town Hall, observed a container
of coffee for $2.19 and when I
returned an hour later, the coffee
had been res tamped "$2.33."
D'Amato charged, "these
overnight ripoffs of the consumer
must stop. There is no need to
restamp products already on the
shelves. The original price insures
-a comfortable profit
margin for the supermarkets.
The added price increases insure
a>«Cty excess profit at, the expense
Of you and me."
Displaying, at a press conference,
several .containers and
boxes of produce bought at local
supermarkets D'Amato said,
"here are countless Examples of
what we are talking about Bottles
and cans stamped three, four,
evem five times. Not only does
this practice make the price
impossible to determine, but it
significantly contributes to the
rising cost of food. There is absolutely
no need to burden the
consumer with this type of injustice.
This practice should be
illegal and without a doubt is
definitely wrong.
"After a two month investigation
by my office into
multiple price fixing, I am
asking, Nassau Consumer Affairs
Commissioner James Picken to
hold a public hearing on this

problem and to seriously look into
the rules and regulations pursuant
to the authority vested in
the Commission of Consumer
Affairs which governs unconscionable
trade practices.
This would stop what I call
overnight ripoffs," said
D'Amato.
D'Amato concluded, "We are
living in hard financial times.
Consumers can understand some
food price hikes, with the increased
cost of fertilizer and bad
weather forcing crop reduction.
However, excess cost wrung out
of you and me by multiple price
increases on packages already on
the shelf must stop and is morally
wrong "
