A FACE LIFT FOR BROADWAY
Residents walking or driving
along Broadway have no doubt
noticed the construction which is
taking place along the strip stores
in the center of Bethpage. No this
is not merely a refurbishing of the
existing sidewalk; it is a total
and radical redo of the entire
block of stores. And when we say
re-do, we mean from head to toe.
We spoke with Ken Siegel of Staks
Management Corp., owners of the
property and his enthusiasm and
plans are just what the
doctor ordered. First, the stores
will have a new facade which will
be geared towards giving the area
an 'Old fashioned Village' look.
This will include brick work as well
as lamp post lighting. Signs will
be totally redone in muted tones
which will add an elegant appeal
to the shops along that strip. Mr.
Siegel was quite enthusiatic about
this project and said that he really
hopes that this improvement will
be the shot of adrenalin which is
needed to pick up business along
Broadway.
This huge improvement,
coupled with the S2 Golden Age
Zone which will be located where
the old apartment building presently
is, along with our new and
expanded library will truly be the
highlight of the town. "It is a sort
of renaissance of this area." said
Siegel. Renaissance is truly the
appropriate word.
Construction as you can see is
already underway and is hoped to
be completed by mid-September
These plans will also include a
permanent hole for the town
Christmas tree and Menorah as
well as a new sidewalk. In fact Mr.
Siegel said as the project continues
he may add planters
and benches although he by no
means wants this new and refurbished
area to turn into a late night
hang out. He said that time will tell
and that things could always be
added. Mr. Siegel also noted that
reports which are given to him
monthly have shown that the
security firm which he hired to
patrol the rear of his stores has
greatly deterred vandalism and graffiti.
All in all it seems as though we
in Bethpage are in for a brand new
look and may I be the first to say
three cheers for the new project
and for the new Bethpage which
will be unveiled before we know
it!
S2 GOLDEN AGE ZONE
APPROVED BY TOWN BOARD
Last week Councilman Lenny
Kunzig's innovative S2 Golden
Age Zone was approved by the
Town Board by a vote of 5 yes
and 1 abstention (Lewis Yevoli,
did not vote as he felt he did not
receive all the information that he
requested). What this means to
Bethpage is 53 single family units
ranging in price from $95,000 and
up for seniors age 55 and older.
The plan which was explained in
detail in previous issues of the
Tribune is a way by which seniors
can remain in Bethpage and not
be driven out of state due to high
taxes and impossible maintenance
on their homes. This new
senior zone will be located on the
corner of Powell Avenue and
Broadway with an entrance on
Powell. It will also incorporate a
recreation center as well as an
outside porch area for residents.
This project coupled with the
new library and now the new
facelift for the strip stores on
