GULF BLIMP CRASHES
A Gulf Blimp made an emergency
landing on the front lawn
of a South Farmingdale residence
at 11:00 am, on Sunday, September
11, 1994.
The 175 foot long airship went
down approximately 40 minutes
after it left Republic Airport in East
Farmingdale, enroute to the US
Open in Queens. It struck power
lines in front of 7 Albers Lane,
South Farmingdale, coming to a
rest on the front lawn. The two
man crew was not injured;
the cameraman suffered minor
injuries and was taken to Mid-
Island Hospital for treatment.
The pilot, Hans Gunther, age 30,
of Florida and co-pilot, Russell
Mills, age 35, of Florida, radioed
the airport that they were experiencing
pressure problems in the
airship's envelope. While attempting
to return to the airport the
problem escalated. Just prior to
the landing the crew turned off all
systems in the ship to avoid a fire
or explosion. Upon landing the
crew and cameraman, John Trap-man,
age 25, of California, exited
the ship. Mr. Trapman complained
of leg pain and was taken by
ambulance to Mid-Island Hospital
in Bethpage where he is being
treated. No other injuries were
reported.
The FAA is at the scene and will
be investigating. The six million
dollar blimp, is owned by Airship
International, 7380 Sandlake
Road, Orlando, Florida, and was
off-loaded of fuel and helium before
