GRANT APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE FOR
LAID-OFF GRUMMAN WORKERS
An application for a grant to help
recently laid off Northrop Grumman
workers has been "fast
tracked," according to Oyster Bay
Town Councilman Thomas L.
Clark.
"The Suffolk County Department
of Labor, on behalf of itself
as the lead agency and the Towns
of Oyster Bay and Hempstead,
requested that a grant application
to help laid off Northrop Grumman
workers 'find new jobs be 'fast
t r a c k e d / " Councilman Clark
stated. "The application is for a
$9,888,900 dollar Long Island
Diversification and Worker Adjustment
Grant, administered by the
U.S. Department of Labor using
monies from the U.S. Department
of Defense.
Councilman Clark went on to
say that in addition to the 3,500
Northrop Grumman workers that
are being laid off Island-wide, the
grant would cover the estimated
2,000 people who will be laid off
by Northrop-Grumman subcontractors.
If the grant is
approved, as expected, the Town
of Oyster Bay would receive in the
neighborhood of $1,900,000 to
offer such services as vocational
training, on-the-job training with
private sector employers, relocating
out of the area, and job search
assistance, including resume
preparation.
"The Suffolk County Department
of Labor and the Towns of
Oyster Bay and Hempstead, which
are the service delivery areas for
the federally funded Job Training
Partnership Act (JTPA) on Long
Island, have been developing this
grant application during recent
months in anticipation of possible
layoffs in the wake of the takeover
of Grumman by the Northrop
Corporation," Councilman Clark
stated. "While it usually takes 30
days from submission of the application,
which, in this case, was
September 22nd, to process a
grant application, with the layoffs
now underway, the process is
being speeded up.
"The Town of Oyster Bay, as the
JTPA service delivery area for
Oyster Bay Town residents, as
well as residents of the Town of
North Hempstead and the City of
Glen Cove, is doing everything
possible to help laid-off Northrop
Grumman workers find new
employment opportunities,"
Councilman Clark emphasized.
"In addition to being a part of this
grant application, we have offered
to have a representative from the
Town's JTPA office at a special
office being set up by Northrop
Grumman to assist displaced
workers. I encourage any laid-off
Northrop Grumman worker who
lives in our service delivery area
to call the JTPA office at 797-4560
to find out what is available now
to get them started on the road to
a new job."
