FIRST EIGHT CHOSEN
TO RUN FOR LEGISLATURE
BY REPUBLICAN COMMITTEE
Nassau Republican Committee
Chairman Joseph N. Mondello
announced the Nassau Republi­can
Executive Committee's first
eight nominations for the new
County Legislature.
"* the candidates and their repre­sentative
districts are as follows:
Darlene D. Harris-1 st, Lance Dar-nell
Clarke-2nd, Richard J.
Nieolello-9th, Keith D. Sernick-
10th, Peter J. Schmitt-12th, Martin
J. Massell-16th, Edward P.
Mangano-17th, and John
Canning-18th.
The remaining 11 candidates
are expected to be nominated in
the next few weeks. The Nassau
County legislators will be elected
on Election Day/Nov. 7,1995. The
County Legislature will replace
the Board of Supervisors when the
new legislature takes office Jan.
1,1996.
Darlene Harris (R-Uniondale)
will run for the 1st legislative
district, which includes most of
Uniondale, Roosevelt and north
Freeport.
Lance Clarke (R-Hempstead)
will run for the 2nd legislative
district, which stretches from
Lakeview to New Cassel and
includes most of Hempstead
village.
Richard Nicolello (R-New Hyde
Park) will run for the 9th legislative
district, which extends from Floral
Park to Westbury including most
of New Hyde Park Mineola and
Carle Place.
Keith Sernick (R-Great Neck)
will run for the 10th legislative
district, which includes most of the
Great Neck peninsula.
Peter Schmitt (R-Massapequa)
will run for the 12th legislative
district, which includes all of the
Massapequas. Schmitt has been
the Town of Oyster Bay Depart­ment
of Community and Youth
Services Commissioner since
1984.
Martin Massell (C-Hicksville)
will run for the 16th legislative
district, which includes parts of
Hicksville, Plainview, Jericho and
Syosset.
Bethpage's own Edward Man­gano
will run for the 17th legis­lative
district, which extends from
Bethpage and Plainview and
includes most of the Hicksville
community. Mangano has been
president of Photonews Long
Island Island Corp. in.Bethpage
since 1987, working his way up
from a pressroom helper when he
began working there in 1978.
Mangano also served as president
of Nassau Tribune Publications
and Beacon Newspapers, and vice
president of CLM Graphics and
MC Realty Enterprises. He is also
a practicing Attorney. In 1994, he
was awarded Small Business Per­son
of the Year by the Nassau
• Chambers of Commerce Council
and was nominated for Newsday's
Volunteer Recognition Award. He
is also extremely active in the
community serving as Past Pres­ident
of the Bethpage Rotary Club
and treasurer of The Bethpage
Chamber of Commerce.
John Canning (R-Sea Cliff) will
run for the 18th legislative district,
which runs along the North Shore
from Oyster Bay and Bayville to
Glen Cove and Sea Cliff.

Women's Club March Events

The month of March has been
a very busy one for the Women's
Club of Bethpage. NYS General
Federation 2nd Dis't. conducted
their annual music contest in early
March. Our own, Louise Haugen
was chairperson for the event
which took place at the Farming-dale
Public Library, due to ongo­ing
renovations of our own library.
High school students from several
areas in Nassau and Suffolk par­ticipated
in the competition. Both
vocal and instrumental renditions
of classical selections were pres­ented.
The Jr. League of Women's
Club of Farmingdale was proud
to sponsor Rebecca Tropiano and
Lauren Meltzner, 1st place
winners in vocal and instrumental
respectively. Bethpage students
Jeanette Harmsworth and Kelly
Brennan, were 2nd place winners,
and 3rd place was awarded to
Kerry Barnhardt and Sarah Seigal
from Huntington. Our sincere
congratulations to them all. Eve­ryone
that entered gave such a
highly accomplished performance
it made it extremely difficult for the
judges to arrive at a decision.
On March 13th Dorothy Rode
hosted our Presidents Day lun­cheon
at her home. On this occa­sion
all club presidents from 2nd
Dist. and officials of NYS Feder­ation
of Women's Clubs are invited
to honor our club President. The
program by Helen Heath on the
life and loves of Presidents wives
was interesting and humorous,
presented with letters and photos
dating back to pre civil war up to
the present First Lady, Hillary
Clinton. Women's Club of Beth­page
President Mattie Latches
thanked Ms. Heath for sharing her
in depth research into the pages
of history.
March 23rd and GFWC 2nd Dist.
sponsored a combined Bi County
meeting and Cultural Arts Day
luncheon at the George Washing­ton
Manor in Roslyn. Following
the business portion of the meet­ing
was a luncheon, craft fair,
raffles and shopping spree. Art
work and hand made crafts by
both students and club women
