AND THE STREAK CONTINUES
#T9 - Brian Solliday - #39 Brandon Testa - #54 Mike Murphy and #67
Dom D'Orazio string out the option play for no gain.
The Long Island record for the most consecutive wins by a high
school football team is 30. That record was set by Garden City from
1990 thru 92. Last Saturday Bethpage beat a tough Levittown Division •
team 22 to 3 to move within 1 of tying that record. That game will
take place this Saturday at Seaford U.S.
The score doesn't indicate quite how hard fought a game it was.
Bethpage scored first midway thru the first quarter on a 7 yard pass
from team captain A.J. Haugen to halfback David Kelly. Then Haugen
passed to Brandon Testa for the 2 point conversion. That proved to
be all the points they would get for the 1st half as Division played
some fierce defense. It didn't help that it was very windy and cold
either.
To make things more exciting and to make sure the fans stayed
around for the second half Division did something to Bethpage that
hasn't been done before. Division held Bethpage's offense from gaining
a first down deep in their own half right before the end of the 1st
half. Chris Cercy had to punt to Division from out of our own end
zone and into the wind. Chris kicked a good punt under the
circumstances and Division called for a free catch at the 32 yard line
with 10 seconds left in the half. Division, having a strong footed kicker
they borrow from their soccer team, Tony Balcan, opted to use a little
used play. When you fair catch a punt a team has an option to.kick
the ball back to the other team just as in a kick-off. But, if the ball
goes through the uprights on this kick the team gets a credit for a
field goal and thus picks up 3 points. Needless to say, Balcan, whose
mother works at the Bethpage school administration office, split the
uprights and made the halftime score 7 to 3, giving Division a definite
shot at making a game of it in the 2nd half.
Bethpage took the initiative quickly in the 3rd quarter. With nice
running by Chris Cercy, Rob Coscia, Dave Kelly, Danny Smith and
A.J. they drove 80 yards in 20 plays. Haugen finished the drive with
a 5 yard pass to Brian Solliday. Chris Cercy ran in the conversion
to make the score 16 to 3.
On the next offensive series by Division a pumped up defensive
team pressured them into a mistake. That mistake ws a forced pass
by their quarterback into the hands of defensive back Danny Smith
who returned it 21 yards for a touchdown closing out our scoring.
Defense was definitely the name of the game Saturday as they held
Division to no touchdowns. Rob Coscia had a great sack of the
quarterback as they were getting deep in our area. Mike McGrath made
a great TD saving tackle another time. Brandon Testa, Brian Solliday,
Dom D'Orazio and Rob Coscia strung out their option play wbile Eric
Haruthunian, Bobby Young, and Danny Smith plugged up the middle.
Congratulations to all the boys on the team on another great game.
Best wishes for Saturday as you go to tie thejrecord.
P.S. Coach Vogts wasn't feeling too well Saturday morning and
missed the game as he had to go to the hospital. The good news
is that he had an Everready Energizer pacemaker inserted Monday
and is doing well. So don't be surprised if you see the big pink bunny
hopping around the field this Saturday (according to Murphy).
Best wishes for a speedy recovery, coach, from all of Bethpage.
Dave Kelly catches a TD pass from A.J. Haugen in first quarter.
