On Saturday October 14, 1995
alarm number 834 got the undivided
attention of all those monitoring
the fire radio. At 5:20
P.M. the Bethpage Volunteer Fire
Department was alerted for a
"plane down opposite 14 Evelyn
drive." This is a suburban residential
area adjacent to Bethpage
State Park.
Assistant Chief Gary Hearn
responded directly from his home
a short distance away. Numerous
emergency vehicles from several
agencies converged on the scene.
Chief Hearn directed Bethpage
fire units to stage at a nearby
school while he attempted to
ascertain the exact location of the
plane crash. Once the site was
pinpointed, Engine '.x.'4 and Heavy
Rescue 33 were called to that
location. Engine 4 deployed
their foam lines as a precaution,
while the rescue crew surveyed
the aircraft for hazards. The pilot
and his one passenger freed themselves
from the single engine
plane prior to the arrival of emer-

gency personnel. They both sustained
relatively minor head injuries
and were transported to
Central General Hospital via Nassau
County police ambulances.
The fire department operation was
completed in 25 minutes. The
crash site was turned over to the
state park police and secured as
a "crime scene" pending the
arrival of federal investigators.
The Bethpage Fire Department
responded to this "general
alarm" incident with 51 firefighters
on 5 engines, a tower ladder, a
heavy rescue truck, one ALS
ambulance, one EMS car, the fire
police and the safety officer. There
were no injuries to anyone on the
ground. It was reported that this
plane was enroute to Republic
Airport in nearby East Farming-dale
when it ran out of fuel. The
pilot was able to put his craft down
along the right-of-way bordering
the State Park. The weather was
cloudy and windy, raining off and
on during the day.
