Island Emergency Food and Shelter
Board, managed by Long
Island's United Way (LIUW), has
received formal notification that
$978,936 of funds appropriated by
Congress for Phase XIV is available
for the bi-county region.
Nassau County has been awarded
$440,282 and Suffolk County
$538,654. (To date, the Federal
government has approved a
nationwide distribution of $46
million for 1996; Congress is
currently deliberating over the
release of the additional $54 million
budgeted to the National
Emergency Food and Shelter
Program).
In distributing the funds, the
Long Island Board selects community
organizations, with effective
fiscal controls, that serve local
residents who have the most
urgent food and shelter needs.
The local Board is comprised of
representatives from 14 local
voluntary groups and the two
counties.
The types of services eligible for
these funds are groceries, emergency
lodging, rent or mortgage
assistance and essential utilities.
Long Island's United Way provides
administrative support for the
program, without charge.
The current Federal grant will
fund emergency services through
October 1996. Among the grant
recipients are The Salvation Army,
Catholic Charities, Family Service
Association (Hempstead), The
Ministries (Coram) and Family
Service League of Suffolk (Huntington).
Long Island has received
more than $12 million of Federal
emergency food and shelter funds
since the first grant in 1984.
Not-for-profit agencies wishing
further information on the program
and application process
should write to the FEMA Local
Board, c/o Long Island's United
Way, 457 Commack Road, Deer
Park, NY 11729.
CALLING' FOR SNOW?
By the time some of our readers receive the Tribune the above
question will surely have been answered. However, forecasters as
of Thursday were calling for more snow: as much as 5 inches on
Friday evening into Saturday morning. While forecasts varied from
a dusting to 8 inches it does seem like we will be getting another
dose of Ol' Man Winter. Doesn't it scare you that thus far our weather
forecaster have been pretty accurate in their predictions?
