Bethpage's 1996 Memorial
THE UNFORGETTABLE
Pay Ceremony and Parade Pay Tribute to Fallen Heroes
Members of the Butehorn Brothers Post 4987 salute our fallen
soldiers at the 1996 Memorial Day Parade Service in Bethpage.
Although the weather looked
ominous and at times threatened
with a drop or two of rain, Bethpage
residents came out in full force to
honor the brave men and women of
our armed forces and salute them
on Memorial Day. The streets of
Broadway and Stewart were lined
with residents all toting American
Flags proudly and cheering as the
parade passed by.
This year's parade was special
in many Ways. First, the Bethpage
High; School Band visited
Washington recently and placed a
wreath on the grave of the unknown
soldier. The H.S. Band then presented
the same wreath at the Memorial Day
Service here in Bethpage. Fred
Cohen, the Bethpage H. S. Band
Advisor was one OT the featured
speakers this year and was proud
not only to be a part of the
ceremony but also proud to have
ventured to Washington D.C. to
place this special wreath.
Guest speaker for the day was
Congressman Peter King who
stressed the importance of always
remembering our veterans on
Memorial Day as well as every day.
He also voiced his beliefs in making
English our first language and
spoke of the importance of not
discarding or ever forgetting our
POW/MIA's.
Wreaths were placed by many
local organizations and a full military
salute was sounded to honor our
War dead. We also were honored to
have Mr. and Mrs. Henaghan, Gold
Star Parents, in attendance.
All in all the ceremonies this year
were very well attended and quite a
special and fitting tribute to our
veterans. Hundreds of residents
took to the Bethpage Community

Sadly We Say Farewell Tos
Assemblyman Phil Healey
On Memorial Day, each year we
take a moment to pay tribute to
those who gave their lives for our
country. This Memorial Day sadly,
v 3 lost another great human being
who too, like our veterans, gave of
himself for not only his country but
also for the constituents that he
served as Assemblyman in the 12th
District.. Assemblyman Phil Healey
passed away on May 27 at the age
of 74 while participating in the
Massapequa Memorial day Parade.
In fact the tireless Assemblyman
was en route to Farmingdale to
participate in their parade.
iHealey, who was involved in
politics for many years was a true
man of the people and never
stopped doing or listening to his
constituents. He was a longtime
friend of the community of
Bethpage and was always there for
our community whenever we asked
him for anything.
I had the privilege of knowing Phil
for over 8 years and personally I
knew him to be a gentle man with
great love for his family, friends and
lor serving his District. He
befriended all those that he came in
contact with and was someone who
truly loved public service. He gave
