Nassau County Executive And Gulotta Moves To Expand
Sports Commission Recognize Olympians Senior Property Tax Exempion
Nassau County Executive Thomas S. Gulotta and Dr. Gary Wadler,
Chairman of the Nassau County Sports Commission, display one of two
Olympic Flags being flown in recognition of the world's best athletes
competing in Atlanta, many of whom come from Nassau. County
Executive Gulotta established the not-for-profit sports commission in ,
1992 to promote sports development in Nassau.
"In our first four years of existence, the Nassau County Sports
Commission has brought more than 20 new sporting events and
activities to the County," Dr. Wadler said. "Among our many
achievements are the relocation of the world renowned Women's Sports
Foundation to Eisenhower Park; the 1994 nationally televised United
States Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships; the 1995 North American
Regional Maccabi Youth Games; and the Olympic Training Swim
Program established at Christopher Morley Park."
"Sporting events, like these, generate millions of dollars for the local
economy and enhance the quality of life for all our citizens, particularly
our young athletes," stated Gulotta. "Chairman Wadler and Donna
Lopiano, Executive Director of the Women's Sports Foundation, are
continually being sought by the media for their expertise."
The Women's Sports Foundation is the premier womens sports
organization in the nation, dedicated to promoting and enhancing the
sports and fitness experience for all girls and women. Founded in 1974
by Billie Jean King and supported by Olympic Champions and Sports
Celebrities like Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Chris Evert, Janet Evans and
Donna de Varona, the Foundation provides educational services,
opportunity, grants and advocacy programs. Through their involvement
on both the grassroots and elite level in sports, the Women's Sports
Foundation has built a strong bond with Olympic Athletes.
County Executive Gulotta's invitation to relocate their headquarters in
Eisenhower Park was welcomed by the Women's Sports Foundation.

County Executive Gulotta said that

enable them to remain in their homes,
near friends and family.
"Under enabling State legislation,
local municipalities have the option to
provide greater senior citizen tax
exemptions for eligible homeowners
65 years of age and older," Gulotta
said, "it has always been this
administration's policy to provide the
maximum tax exemption allowed
under State Law."
The County Executive's proposal
was endorsed by Legislator Salvatore
B. Pontillo, who serves on the
Legislature's Finance Committee.
"Senior citizens are the backbone of
our society. Through their hard work
and dedication, they have made our
county what it is today. We.must do
everything within our power to insure
that they can retain their homes in our
County."
Both Gulotta and Pontillo said it is
vital that senior citizen homeowners
