PORT WASHINGTON FD CALLS

ST. MARTIN'S VOLUNTEERS
HELP BUILD HOUSES IN MAINE
Bethpage firefighters pulled off a dramatic rescue in Port Washington
on Tuesday. The specialized Tactical Rescue Team was alerted to a
construction accident in Port Washington. A construction worker was
trapped under a 30* x 15* concrete foundation wall. Bethpage
firefighters used their state of the art equipment and specialized training
to free the man. Pictured above is the victim being brought out
from underneath the rubble. He is in good condition.
MANGANO URGES PATAKI TO SIGN
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PLAN
.»ii»m>s »te >&?^%&k&i.
Members of the group from St. Martin of Tours, Bethpage, who made
the week-long trip to Maine included, (from row, left to right) Chrissy
Orlando, Fr. Kevin MacDonald, Kathy Reymont, Brian "Bear" Arcuri
and Al Andrews, (second row, left to right) Sr. Ann Walsh, IHM, Diana
Mitchell, Caitroina Fitzgerald and Kristen Campbell; (back row) Chris
Mitchell and Fr. Ed Faliskie, also a Redemptorist from Queens.
Legislator Edward Mangano, (R-Bethpage,
17th L.D.), has urged
Governor George Pataki to sign
legislation designating the Grumman
Site located in Bethpage as an
Economic Development Zone.
"This site, pnce employed over
25,000 people, currently employs
only 5,000. As layoffs at Grumman
and the high cost of doing business
on Long Island continue, businesses
are discouraged from relocating
to our region. The Taxpayer
pays for these layoffs through individual
job loss and decreased
school district revenue," stated legislator
Mangano.
The incentives provided by creating
an Economic Development
Zone will restore jobs and revenue
by bringing industry back to Long
Island, in the Bethpage and
Hicksville communities.
The Economic Development
Zone program will further assist the
Bethpage and Hicksville areas by
providing a variety of financial incentives
and economic development
benefits.
"Many residents in the Bethpage
and Hicksville communities in
the 17th Legislative District have
been negatively affected by the loss
of Grumman. Whether through unemployment
or the loss of revenue
spent by former employees, it has
been a devastation for many. My
main goal in urging this legislation is
to pump up the local and regional
economy," concluded Mangano.
Have you ever seen a picture of
former President Jimmy Carter carrying
wood or hammering nails? He
was probably working with the organization
called "Habitat For Humanity"
that began in his home
state of Georgia twenty years ago.
Recently, a group of six teenagers
and five adults from St. Martin
of Tours in Bethpage experienced
first-hand what it means to
share our resources and help other
people in this worthwhile project.
The goal was to help build a
house in downtown Portland,
Maine, for a low income family. By
the time the St. Martin's group arrived,
the two story Duplex was almost
completed. StilLthere was
plenty of work to do. Caulking nail
holes, painting - even building stairs
and cutting baseboards - were all
part of a days work.
The workday began at 8:30 with
instructions from the on-site supervisor.
He would explain exactly what
had to be done and how to do it.
"Safety First" was the rule of the
day, especially on the scaffolding
that reached heights of thirty feet.
While the experience centered
around the work, the week consisted
of much more. The group
slept on the floor in the Parish Hall
of an Episcopalian Church, cooked
their own meals, and showered in
the local Y.W.C.A. Evenings were
spent reflecting on the days experiences,
going to the movies, or simply
"hanging out" together.
While none of the eleven would
profess to be called an "expert
homebuilder";.the sunburns, blisters,
and a few new muscles were
all signs that "Habitat" does much
more than build homes - it builds
character.
