VOL. 30 NO. 34 Aug. 30-Sept. 5, 1996
The United States Golf Association
has announced that the 2002
U.S. Open will be played on June
13-16 over the-Black Course of the
Bethpage State Park, located in
Farmingdale, N.Y. The event will
mark the first time that the national
championship has been contested
on a publicly-owned golf course.
Bethpage State Park features
nearly 1,500 acres of recreational
^facilities that include five golf
courses. Golf-course architect A.W.
Tillinghast designed three of them
including the Black Course, Which
first opened in 1936. The USGA will
pay an estimated;$2 million to enhance
the course's layout to reflect
U.S. Open conditions. The Bethpage
State Park course-maintenance
department will help
supply existing manpower and
equipment to assist in some of the
reconstruction projects.
"Bringing the U.S. Open to
Bethpage will help promote public
golf in New York and throughout the
United States," George E. Pataki,
Governor of New York, said in
making the announcement. "In addition,
the restoration of the Beth-

Governor Pataki has issued ari
Executive Order that creates a Task
Force for the 2002 U.S. Open corri-prised
of the following State of New
York officials: Majority Leader of trie
Senate; Speaker of the Assembly-
Secretary to the Governor; Com-J
missioned of the New York State Office
of Parks, Recreation & Historic
Preservation; Commissioner of the
Department of Economic Development;
the Superintendent of the
Department of State Police; or, in
each case, their designated representative;
and four other members
appointed by the Governor, who will
also designate a chairperson.
"It's hard to overstate our enthusiasm
for bringing our national
championship to a golf course
owned by the public," David Fay,
executive director of the USGA,
said. "Most courses and golfers to
day are public in orientation, and
this news just underscores how important
public golf is to the game of
golf."
