Bethpage Rotary Club.

is known as "Dani" is the sister of
Jinette's brother Berto, and has
raised Jinette from infancy in the
Dominican Republic.
Christmas Present to Jinette:
Rotary Gives Heart Operation;
Young Girl Receives Gift of Life
Jinette Duran, a beautiful three-year-old girl with a pretty smile, was born with a hole in
her heart. But an ordinary operation (for us in the. United States) could not be given to Jinette
because her country, the Dominican Republic, does not have the technology we have right here
on Long Island. As a result, Jinette's heart pumped extra hard to keep her alive, causing her heart
to swell "to the size of Patrick Ewing's heart," according to one doctor at North Shore University
Hospital. Jinette's heart became so enlarged that it eventually crushed one of her lungs. At this
point the Rotary Club of Bethpage became aware of this needy case and saved Jinette's life
through the Gift of Life program. Through the efforts of the International Committee of the
Bethpage Rotary Club, Jinette and her aunt who raised her, Damaris Duran, were flown here from
the Dominican Republic, and Jinette

heart surgery which saved her life and twenty-one-year-old Dani
Duran, Jinette's de facto mother.
was promptly admitted to North
Shore University Hospital where
Doctors Sheel Vatsia and Dipak
Kholwadwala donated their services
in performing successful open heart
surgery on the young girl. Jinette's
heart is pumping soundly and is now
decreasing in size, and her lung is
working as it should. The doctors
now expect Jinette to live a full,
active, and happy life.
The story began a couple of
years ago in the town of Santiago in
the Dominican Republic, a country
next to Puerto Rico. Jinette's father,
Berto Duran, and Berto's sister
Damaris—who raised Jinette—
noticed the little child perspiring
acutely and coughing abnormally.
Berto and Damaris, along with
Jinette's grandparents, Rafael and
Elsa Duran, were soon at their wit's
end until they were able to find the
acclaimed doctor from their country,
Doctor Maier, who is knowledgeable
about the worldwide services of
Rotary, and who is a major player in
the Gift of Life program. Doctor
Maier explained that only through
open heart surgery could Jinette's
life be saved, and he promptly
contacted Gift of Life headquarters
on Long Island.
And so within weeks, Jinette
and Berto's sister, Damaris, found
themselves scheduled for a plane
