Twelve year old Alyia Grant lives in
a tenement apartment in New York
City with her mother and three
siblings. It's hot, crowded and
dangerous in her neighborhood,
and she has to spend a lot of time
indoors. Last summer, she had a
repr eve from the usual summer
boredom of life in the city when she
visited the Pooler family of
Bethpage. Her visit was made
possible through the Fresh Air
Fund's Friendly Town Program.
"When I first got to Bethpage, I
was] worried about whether they
wou d like me or not. But Pam, Jay
and Diane were so friendly and nice,
the made me feel like part of the
family. We did a lot of cool things
like going to the Bethpage
Community Pool and out on their
boat It was so much fun!" said
Alyia of her visit.
Sirjice 1877, volunteer host
families like the Poolers have been
providing disadvantaged inner-city
children with free one or two week
summer vacations. Over 1.6 million
children, who otherwise would not
experience life outside the city, have
made lasting summer memories
through the Friendly Town Program.
This year, close to 7,000 children
will visit host families in 13 states

Two hundred families in Nassau
and Suffolk will be hosts for Fresh
Air Fund children this summer.
Grace Razukas of Syosset,
Volunteer chairperson for the local
Friendly Town, indicated that more
families are needed. "There is
always an abundance of kids and
never enough families to host them.
It doesn't take much to become a
host - just a big heart and an extra
bed."
There are no financial
requirements to be a host family.
Most families simply want to share
their home and family life with a
disadvantaged child. Hosts may
specify their preference on the sex
and age of the child. Children range
in age from six to twelve years of
age. Sixty percent of the children
are reinvited to visit the same family
year after year, making for longterm
relationships. Reinvited youngsters
may continue in the program
through the age of 18 and may be
invited to visit for more than two
weeks.

Governor George E. Pataki, joined by elected officials and local school
children, announced the opening of the Megan's Law 900 Number,
providing New York's parents with an invaluable resource to protect their
children from dangerous pedophiles. "Crucial information is now available
to New York's parents," Governor Pataki said. "New Yorkers will now have
quick and easy access to the vital information they need to make informed,
responsible decisions about the safety of their children." Prior to an
offender's release from prison, a five-member "Board of Examiners of Sex
Offenders" appointed by the Governor, will recommend to the court a
"degree of risk of repeat offense." Depending on whether the risk is low,
moderate or high, the offender will receive a Level One, Two or Three
designation. This designation is ultimately made by the court. The amount
of information about an offender allowed to be released depends on this
designation. By dialing 1 -900-3838, Monday through Friday between 8 am
and 5 pm, callers will reach staff at the Division of Criminal Justice Services
(DCJS) who will provide information regarding sex offenders on the state's
registry. All 50 states now require sex offender registration.
