BETHPAGE BOY SCOUTS
HELP CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
WELCOME CABLEVISJON
Pictured above is "welcome wagon workers" & the stacks of
literature.
On August 29 & 30th Boy Scout
Troop 604 & The Bethpage Chamber
of Commerce worked together in a
combined project to welcome Ca-blevision
to Bethpage. Cablevsion is
in the process of moving its facilities
to the Old Grumman property. To introduce
Cablevisions employees to
our community, the Bethpage Chamber
of Commerce decided to prepare
1500 packages with literature from
eachpf its member businesses,
community organization & political
leaders to give to its employees.
Troop 604 volgnteered to help the
Chamber of Commerce in this huge
task given the fact that more than 40
organizations provided literature to
put in these packages. The Boy
Scouts supervised by Scout Master
Matt Brown & several other scout
leaders "camped out" in the conference
room of Century 21 Metro Reality
(which was donated for this project)
with the approximately 60,000 Flyers
& set upon their tasks. When the
boys were through what started out
as many, many papers had become
informational package with which to
welcome our new neighbors.

Our National Pastime has given
us a lot to cheer about this year. Most
of us are aware of Mark McGuire and
Sammy Sosa's incredible home run
chase, the Yankees' incredible domination,
and the Mets' fight for a wildcard
spot. Little League Baseball has
also been in the headlines with the
Toms River New Jersey boys team
winning the Little League World Series
in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
But what some of you may not be
aware of was the very special
achievement made by one of our own
Little League teams this year. Bethpage
Baseball Association's Girls Minor
League Softball team, age 9-10,
were Williamsport Little League
Champions of New York District 32!
Winning a district title in Williamsport
competition is a major achievement
for any little league program, and is
not easily or often accomplished. The
success of the girls continued in the
Sectionals, as they came within two
games of going into the New York
State Championship round, finishing
in the top four teams on Long Island.
The tournament for Williamsport
consisted of double elimination play
within their district. Playing against All-star
teams from nearby towns, the
girls took their skills level up a notch
playing for the first time this season
with bunting and stealing. They were
very impressive. They opened up
their first game with a win over Central
Nassau by a score of 18-10. The offense
was sparked by Kara Shelly with
four hits including a single to score
Melissa Owenburg with the go ahead
run, while Kristen Claus contributed
two doubles and 3 RBI. Marianne
Femminella hit a home run and combined
with Lauren Poplawski on the
mound to hold Central Nassau in
check.
In game 2 they faced Hicksville,
who proved to be one of their toughest
competitors. Having played four
games the day before to win the Mer-illon
tournament and losing both
Lindsay Hall and Kara Shelly to injuries,
the girls lost a tough one 19-13
in Hicksville. Despite the loss, Bethpage
was still in the game throughout
with Lauren Walsh getting three big
hits, and a tape measure home run by
Kristen Claus.
