Patient Safety Awareness Week
Pictured below is Ed Mangano, County legislator, presenting
a Nassau County Proclamation to lleene Corina, President of
PULSE. To Ed's left is Gary Bretton of Brettons Deli who
allowed his store to be an official rest stop for the runners. To
lleene's right is Bryant Kaplan who organized the marathon run.
Included in the picture are many runners and volunteers who
made this day very successful.
During the week of March 9th,
New York State has proclaimed this
week to be Patient Safety
Awareness Week. This year, to kick
off Patient Safety Awareness Week
an organization called PULSE did a
Long Island Patient Safety Marathon
Run on Sunday, March 9th. PULSE
is a nonprofit organization, which
supports victims and the survivors of
medical error and substandard
healthcare. Their mission is to help
educate the community and
advocate for a safer healthcare
system. During Patient Safety week,
PULSE is invited into hospitals to
distribute literature and give
workshops about patient safety and
educating patients to become
advocates in their healthcare.
The Patient Safety marathon run
began at the Nassau University
Medical Center in East Meadow and
ended at the Northport VA Hospital,
a total of 26.2 miles. The run
organizer, Bryant Kaplan, CSW,
Executive Director Of People
Counseling Agency of Bethpage,
and a three time Ironman triathlon
competitor, donated his time to their
cause by organizing the run,
recruited runners, and greeting the
hospital administrators, local
politicians, and the media. Bryant
made sure that the run course would
go right down the heart of
Bethpage. Throughout the day of
the run, patient safety literature was
distributed by volunteers through
the communities in which the run
passed. There was a great showing
of support from the two hospitals
involved, the community and our
local politicians. For more
information about Patient Safety or
the organization PULSE, call 579-
4711.
