VOL.41 NO. 15
SERVING BETHPAGE, ISLAND TREES, OLD BETHPAGE, PLAINVIEW, SEAFORD AND PLAINEDGE
April 11-17, 2003
RALLYING FOR THE TROOPS
By Linda Mangano
What a day for Bethpage! On
Sunday, April 6 the Town of
Oyster Bay and the Bethpage
Chamber of Commerce
sponsored a rally in support of
our troops and this was a rally
like no other we have ever seen.
The south parking lot adjacent to
the Long Island Railroad turned
into an ocean of flag waving
residents who came out in a huge
show of patriotism to let our
servicemen and women know that
they are all praying for their
safety and speedy return home.
The event was held at 4:15 pm
and Town officials estimated that
well over 2500 TOB residents
were in attendance. Our very
own, Bethpage Fire Department
provided a gorgeous backdrop as
they erected their huge American
Flag, which flew proudly over
the Town of Oyster Bay Show
mobile.
The event began with opening
remarks by Supervisor John
Venditto, who served as emcee
for this very special tribute to the
armed forces. Supervisor
Venditto spoke to the huge crowd
and reminded them of the
sacrifice and bravery of our
troops. After almost every
sentence the crowd chanted
"U.S.A.!", "U.S.A.!" Reverend
Sal Bennardo of the Bethpage
Assembly of God Church opened
the ceremony with a touching
prayer and Arlene Howard, Past
Commander of the Nassau
County VFW and member of
Wave National had the crowd at
attention with their hands over
their hearts as the Pledge of
Allegiance was recited.
Renowned sop ranis t, Barbara
Divas then sung our National
Anthem as only she could do.
Her voice was strong, heartfelt
and perfect.
Congressman Peter King,
addressed the crowd and spoke
about the importance of
supporting our troops and our
President. He spoke of the need
that our troops have to feel that
the American people are behind
them and he reminded everyone
of the vital role that these men
and woman are playing in
ensuring that the world is safe
from evil dictators who harbor
weapons of mass destruction.
Legislator Edward Mangano
