Red Cross Honors Volunteers For
Helping Military Families During War
American Red Cross in Nassau
County (ARC/Nassau) volunteer
Cheryl Plavin of Bethpage received
ARC/Nassau's Specific Service
Award for, in part, helping Long
Island military families before and
during the Iraqi conflict. She
received the award during
ARC/Nassau's 87th Annual Meeting
and Awards Luncheon on
Wednesday, June 18, 2003, at The
Cottage at Milleridge Inn, in Jericho.
In all, ARC/Nassau presented 12
awards for various categories,
including those who educated Long
Islanders on disaster preparedness
during these uncertain times.
"Cheryl provided remarkable
support this past year during a very
challenging time for our community
and nation," said Harriette P.
Thayer, ARC/Nassau Chairman of
the Board. "She offered
compassionate assistance to Long
Island families as America went to
war in Iraq."
Plavin served a leading role in
ARC/Nassau's Armed Forces
Emergency Services program by
organizing numerous "Get to Know
Us Before You Need Us"
deployment briefings.
"As America prepared for
possible war, and then went into
war, her volunteer work enabled
thousands of local military reservists
and their families to learn of the
important American Red Cross
assistance available to them, such
as emergency communication,
financial assistance and counseling,"
said Joan Desir, ARC/Nassau
Director of Volunteer Resources.
"There's no doubt about it, we
needed someone with Cheryl's
dedication and concern to ensure
these families knew of the vital
services we provide."
The Chapter and our community
are fortunate to have Cheryl Plavin
working hard for our military families,
Desir added.
"Every day, the Red Cross
carries the sad news of a death or
illness of a family member, or the
joyful news of a birth, to servicemen
and women worldwide, and we often
arrange emergency travel, enabling
military families to be together,"
Plavin said. "The long separations
and stressful situations that occur
when a service member deploys
often places a serious emotional
strain on families. The Red Cross
links military personnel and their
families through services which
include confidential counseling as
well as neutral, impartial assistance
when and where needed,
particularly during times of crisis at
home."

successful year as Commander was
left by Past Cmdr Epstein who left
his Post gathering enough funds to
carry on all the rituals of the order.
Community activities such as The
Voice of Democracy, (Patriots Pen),
which is a very popular essay writing
event each year in our local schools,
will continue without interruption,
Memorial Day events, such as the
cemetery program, in which every
members grave receives a special
plaque every year. Veterans
Hospital and Nursing yearly
visitation, Parades and all other
duties performed by this military
organization, which is over one
hundred years old. The club was
jammed with attendees. Noticeably
was many family members of the
incoming Commander Lawrence
"Bud" Steubing. The organization
was honored by the presence of the
American Legion Commander Herb
Lewis and his lovely wife Anita.
One of the first things the new
Commander's itinerary calls for is to
have all the Bethpage families
whose son is overseas doing his
duty to his country to contact him.
The commander has a starred
banner to hang in the window of
these qualified families! When these
families come forward a picture will
be taken of the presentation. Please
