VOL. 41 NO. 5 January 31-February 6, 2003 FORTY CENTS
You Can't Take It
With You
On December 5th, 6th and 7th,
the Bethpage High School
Masquers Guild captivated theater
goers of Bethpage with their
outstanding production of You Can't
Take It With You. Judging by the
reaction from the audience, the
show was a phenomenal success,
thus continuing a long tradition of
high quality performances under the
direction of Mr. William Kroupa.
Seniors Richard Ryan and Jane
Robin both made their debut on the
BHS stage as well as both taking
commanding and comical leads
Martin Vanderhof and Penelope
Sycamore, a grandfather and his
daughter. Junior Matthew Levy
played the childish and enthusiastic
Paul, the husband of Penelope,
while Senior Deidre Cutler gave a
noteworthy performance as his
firework -- constructing sidekick, Ms.
DePinna. Paul and Penelope's
children were both extremely well

Talent Show Benefits
Cancer Victims
While many television sets will be
tuned to FOX network's American
Idol this month, the Bethpage High
School Student Civic Association, in
conjunction with SPEC (Students
Putting an End to Cancer) will be
sponsoring a Talent Show of their
own. The show will take place at
Bethpage High School on Monday,
February 10, 2003 at 6:30 PM.
Proceeds from the event will benefit
the Cancer Victim's Fund.
Approximately 25 acts,
consisting of musicians, comics, and
other talented performers, will grace
the stage of the Bethpage High
School auditorium. Tickets are
available at the door: $3 for students
and $5 for adults. Raffles and prizes
will also be awarded and
refreshments will be served. There
will also be half-priced NY Islander
hockey tickets and NY Dragons
arena football tickets.
Confirmed celebrity judges
include former New York Jets
football players Marty Lyons, John
Nitty, and Kenny Schroy, singer
Ralph Sirico of the rock group
Sound. Additional celebrity guests
are also expected to weigh in.
"This is a special collaboration of
two active student groups to raise
money for the ultimate charity:
helping to put an end to cancer. The
students have worked extremely
hard to put this talent show together
and the acts have been practicing
for months," said Student Civic
Advisor and event coordinator
Jackie Jill-Rito. "We thank them all,
as well as our celebrity judges for
volunteering their precious time. We
welcome the entire Bethpage
community to enjoy an evening filled
with family fun and super
entertainment that benefits an
important cause."
SPEC was created by former
student Brad Jerson with support
from the school administration and
the Bethpage Board of Education.
SPEC has continued to coordinate
activities to raise funds for cancer
awareness, while also coordinating
fundraisers and trips to visit children
diagnosed with cancer.
Student Civic has participated in
their fair share of community service
projects and charitable events as
well. Every year, they volunteer to
help out at the Marty Lyons
Foundation's annual holiday party to
benefit terminally ill children. The
group also volunteers to shovel
snow and run errands for the elderly,
visits area nursing homes, donates
food to iocal pantries and shelters,
collects funds for the Long Island
Coalition Against Domestic
Violence, and coordinates blood
drives and numerous other fund
raisers. Next week, they will
participate in a human rights forum at
Hofstra University.
If you cannot attend the talent
show, but wish to make a donation
to the Cancer Victim's Fund, please

High School at 644-4100.
