SERVING BETHPAGE, ISLAND TREES, OLD BETHPAGE, PLAINVIEW, SEAFORD AND PLAINEDGE
December 19-25, 2003 FORTY CENTS
By Linda Mangano
th
Snow filled the air along with
a crippling wind that made you
frozen to the bone on December
13, but that didn't stop the
playing of Bethpage 's Annual
Bretton 's Benefit Bowl At times
you couldn 't see your hand in
front of your face due to the
incredible amount of fluffy
snowflakes, but Bretton's Bowl
went on as planned as the mighty
Bretton's team took on the feisty
Bethpage Fire Department.
This game, which is in its 16
year, has become a tradition here
in the community of Bethpage
and it is a tradition that helps
hundreds of families each and
every year. The money, which is
raised from this game goes
directly to people in our own
community who are in need. And
although many of us would find it
hard to believe that there are so
many less fortunate in our own
backyards, believe me there
certainly are.
This was a very special game
as it was dedicated to a
wonderful and caring person
who truly was taken from us too
soon. Anthony Guglielmo was a
true friend to the Bethpage
community and he was a regular
learn member on the Bretton's
team. His love for his community
and his caring heart was what
perhaps made him the special
person that he was. Losing such
a wonderful person at such a
young age is a true tragedy to
not only his family but to the
community who loved him so
very much. As a tribute to this
man and to his family this year
the Bretton's Bowl was held in
his honor. Throwing out the first
ball this year was Gina
Guglielmo, his wife.
Although the weather was
responsible for the lack of
spectators, those in attendance
stood together to sing "God
Bless the USA " as well as watch
the Vietnam Veterans of America
provide the colors for the start of
the event. And in spite of the
horrible storm Santa arrived to
make his traditional Bretton's
Bowl appearance. Also on hand
were the members of the
Bethpage Junior Fire
Department.
After all was said and done the
final score of the game was 6-0
with the Bretton's team being
victorious.
Although everyone wins when
it comes to this Bethpage
tradition. You see the holidays
are brighter because people in
this community come together
and give with their hearts to the
Bethpage Community
Foundation. This game is a
tribute to each and every person
who participate in it one way or
another and it is a tribute to the
entire community of Bethpage.
Although exact figures are not
yet in as to the exact amount that
this year's game has raised one
thing is for. sure.... it has raised a
lot of spirits and lifted many
hearts...and isn't that the true
meaning of the season.
?Mmm
The fierce players of the Bethpage Fire Department.
The Mighty Bretton's team.
Gina Guglielmo and Quarterback Paul Bitetti stop for a picture
after Gina throws out the first ball to start the game.
