ALBANY - Veterans and their
families are reminded that the
deadline for applying for a veteran's
real property tax exemption is
quickly approaching, according to
George P. Basher, acting director of
the New York State Division of Veteran's
Affairs.
"March 1st is the deadline for
filing tax exemption applications in
many towns across New York State"
the acting director said, adding that
if the property owner misses the
deadline the tax benefit can be lost
for another year.
The cut-off date may vary in
some communities, and veterans
should check with their local assessor
to ensure that their application is
timely filed.
Veterans real property tax exemptions
varies from community to
community, according to Basher,
who explained that the state allows
municipalities to offer a partial property
tax exemption under two laws:
the original statute, the so-called
"Eligible funds" exemption; and the
newer law, the "alternative veterans
exemption."
"The eligible funds exemption
offers a maximum $5,000 reduction
on assessed value of property purchased
with veterans funds, such
as mustering out pay, disability
pension or compensation, war bonus,
and veterans insurance dividends,"
the acting director said.
"The new law passed in 1984
provides for a tax exemption of 15-
percent for wartime service, an additional
10-percent for combat duty
and an added exemption equal to
half of the veteran's service-connected
disability rating," Basher
said. The alternative exemption, if
locally adopted, authorizes communities
to establish a dollar value cap
on categories within the benefit.
March 1 also is the deadline in
many communities to apply for the
School Tax Relief program (STAR),
which provides homeowners savings
on their school tax bill.
"While not a veterans' benefit
