•Hi:--
On Monday March 15 is old man winter blasted Long Island with
our worst snow storm of the season. This March blast treated many
parts of Long Island with nearly 6 inches of snow and pretty frigid
temps as well as many power outages.
After an intensive search, the
Board of Education of the Bethpage
School District has chosen its
new superintendent. Harvey Hil-burgh,
a nationally-recognized educator
who has been superintendent
of the 4000 student Minisink Valley
Central School District in Slate Hill,
New York for the past nine years,
will begin in May.
Mr. Hilburgh replaces Michael
Mostow who left the district to help
guide the Roosevelt School district
through one of the most critical periods
in that school system's history.
"I'm very excited to join Bethpage
and help this excellent school
district successfully enter the next
century," said Mr. Hilburgh. "The
staff and Board of Education here
are clearly focused on providing
students with the tools and resources
they need to succeed. I'm
proud to be a part of that kind of
district."
Among his accomplishments at
Minisink Valley are the introduction
of innovative instructional programs
designed to boost student
achievement, a policy of cost-conscious
and cost-effective budgeting,
the cultivation of a true spirit
of cooperation among the entire
school-community, and, this winter,
the development and successful
communication of a $31 million
school improvement plan.
He has won a number of professional
awards for his leadership
and commitment to children, including
the Educator of the Year
award from Phi Delta Kappa, the
prestigious Leadership for Learning
Award from the American Association
of School Administrators, and
most recently, the Orange County
Human Rights Commission Award.
Mr. Hilburgh has earned a reputation
among New York educators
for his strong child advocacy, his
educational leadership and commitment
to team building, his passion
for instructional innovation, and
his sense of humor.
He and his wife, Marlene, have
two grown children.
