Norma
Forever
For over 40 years patent leather
shoe clad children with big smiles
on their faces and duffel bags
sloping over their shoulder have
walked through the door at Norma's
School of Dance ready for another
fun session of dancing. These children
all eager to learn a new step or
practice an old routine all walked by
a wonderful, warm and vibrant
woman seated at her desk- greeting
each child by name with a sincere
smile. That woman was Norma
Farrar, the one and only....NORMA
and sadly the longtime friend to so
many passed away on January 11.
Most people I for one, for a long
time never even knew Norma's last
name. She was just Norma, the
wonderful and vivacious owner and
creative director of Norma's School
of Dance, who for over ten decades
kept toes tapping and feet dancing
in Bethpage. Her school of dance
was more that just a business it is
an institution here in Bethpage. And
that was because of her commitment
to the children and her beliefs
and ideals that made her school a
place of not only learning but a
place that love truly built.
To say that Norma was dedicated
is an understatement. Norma
made her dancers, and I say her
dancers because they all were and
always will be, feel good about
themselves. She made you believe
in yourself and she gave you the
feeling of being invincible. Whether
you were the best tap dancer or
perhaps the worst she made you
feel proud to be a part of her school
and she made you feel proud of
yourself. Much more was taught in
her school than ballet positions or
jazz steps. Norma's school taught
values, she taught commitment and
above all she showed each and
every child lucky enough to be a
part of her magic that anything
could be accomplished if you felt it
in your heart.
In her personal life Norma was
equally devoted to her family. She
was a devoted wife, companion and
partner to Hehry and a mother and
a friend to her children Bonnie,
Cindy, Judy and Traci. She was a
wonderful sister to Iris and George.
And she was a cherished grandmother
to Robin.Vicki, Mario, Rachel,
David, Sara, Kiera and Taryn.
She was also a lucky enough to
have a great granddaughter Alexis
whom she cherished as well.
The love that this special
woman had inside she shared with
her family and this marvelous Pied
Piper of dance was kind enough to
share her love with her friends and
students as well.
There could never be another
Norma to the community of Bethpage.
She was a pillar of this community
who taught generations of
children all wanting to experience
her sincere magic. She was a tradition
and a true blessing to all who
knew her and she lived life with a
vigor and zest that was envied by
all.
Norma Farrar will be sincerely
missed by everyone but her legacy
and her ideals will live on and on in
all the children and adults that she
touched through her extraordinary
life. She left so many with a wonderful
irreplaceable gift and that gift
was her spirit and enthusiasm and
her love of life. And although we will
not be able to hear the sound of
her pressing her old typewriter keys
any longer, the sounds of children
laugher when dancing at school will
always keep her spirit and her
memory alive forever.
