YOUR OFFICIAL HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER
VOL. 33 NO. 38 OCTOBER 15-21, 1999 40 CENTS
CELEBRATING THE VFW'S FIRST CENTURY
The official 100th Anniversary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of
the United States, better known as "the VFW," was September 29,
1999. This 2,000,000-member organization, composed entirely of
veterans who served on foreign soil or in foreign waters during time of
war, was formed by army and navy veterans of the Spanish-American
War, returning to a disinterested nation. Today VFW membership
consists of overseas veterans of World War II, Korea, Vietnam,
Lebanon, Grenada, the Gulf, and other little-known wars or
"engagements" since World War II. Only a small handful are still with
usfromWorld.Warl.
Butehorn Brothers Post 4987, VFW's Bethpage Post, celebrated
this important milestone in two ways:
At 11:00 AM on September 29, members of Post 4987 formed at the
Bethpage Community Park for a simple, private ceremony to recognize
and commemorate the accomplishments of those who established
the VFW and those who helped build it to the powerful yet
compassionate organization it is today.
That same evening at the Bethpage Public Library, a true celebration
was held, with the public invited. Shown below are some of the
morning ceremonies. Ernest Warnken
