A Good Idea Travels Across Many Miles
Margaretville Flag Deposit Mailbox
Adopted After Tribune Article
Dear Linda,
Thought you might be interested in seeing how far a good idea will travel
- 200 miles.
When we put our mailbox in Bethpage to collect old flags, I thought that
was such a good idea. I took the page from the Tribune, wrote a letter to the
American Legion Post in Margaretville, NY 12455, and enclosed the article.
Margaretville is the closest big town to our summer retreat in the Catskills
and the only Legion Hall I am familiar with up here.
Imagine my surprise when I opened this week's paper and saw this
picture and explanation.
This mailbox - flag box cannot compare to the one Bob & Fred's Auto
Body designed for Bethpage but it does get the message across. I'm sure the
article printed in the Tribune set the pattern on how to go about achieving
this important project. Hope this catches on in other towns as well.
Yours truly,
Doris Steimer

FLAG DEPOSIT - Middletown American Legion Post 216 in
Margaretville now has a depository for used flags. Legionnaire George
Vining of Margaretville was instrumental in setting up this service. He
cited the cooperation of personnel at the Margaretville Post Office for
helping to obtain a used mailbox for this project. The box was then
painted and placed in front of the Legion hall. After flags are collected,
Legionnaires dispose of them properly.
