The Principal of Bethpage High
School, Dr. Antoinette MacLeod,
announced that Theresa Achtziger,
Stacey Choi and Sarah Lowenthal
have been named Commended
Students in the 2001 National Merit
Scholarship Program. A Letter of
Commendation from the School and
National Merit Scholarship
Corporation (NMSC), which
conducts the program, will be
presented by the Principal to these
scholastically talented seniors.
Some 34,000 Commended
Students throughout the nation are
being recognized for their
exceptional academic promise.
Although they will not continue in the
competition for Merit Scholarship
awards to be offered next spring,
Commended Students placed
among the top five percent of more
than one million students who
entered the 2001 Merit Program by
taking the 1999 Preliminary
SAT/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test.
A spokesperson for the National
Merit Scholarship Corporation
commented, 'The young men and
women named Commended
Students have demonstrated
outstanding academic potential by
their performance in the very
competitive Merit Program. In a
nation that values excellence, it is
important to publicly recognize the
attainments of scholastically
talented young people and the
schools that nurture their
development. We hope this
recognition will help broaden the
educational opportunities of
Commended Students and serve as
encouragement to all students to
develop their abilities to the fullest."

A Message to Our Readers
Last week a letter to the Editor appeared in this publication, which
was not the opinion of this editor but rather of the signatory of the
letter. While I strongly believe in our first amendment right, I can
tell you that if I had read this letter, I would have exercised
reservation and it would not have been printed. Unfortunately,
unforeseeable personal obligations prevented me from personally
checking the letters last week, which resulted in publishing the
letter. It was in fact a mistake, and I apologize for the offensive
content of the letter and wish to retract its appearance in our
newspaper. I wish to thank all those who have contacted me
regarding this matter and I heartfully regret any hurt or anger that
the above-mentioned letter has caused. I hope you know in your
hearts that we are deeply sorry.
Thank you,
Linda Mangano

New York Jets' players Tom
Tupa and Victor Green recently
videotaped a series of public service
announcements (PSAs) for the
Nassau County Coalition Against
Domestic Violence (NCCADV) at the
Jets' training facility at Hofstra
University in Hempstead.
Cablevision Systems
Corporation partnered with the
NCCADV to produce and cablecast
the series to help raise awareness of
domestic violence on Long Island,
utilizing Cablevision's unique
resources as a local communications
company. The PSAs also feature
hotline numbers for individuals to
get guidance and help when they are
someone they know is in an abusive
relationship.
The series of three PSAs will air
across Long Island during the month
of October, National Domestic
Violence Awareness Month;
addressing issues of family violence
and dating. The PSAs focus on how
domestic violence affects not only an
individual, but the entire family.
"By using strong male role
models like the Jets players, we hope
to get the attention of male viewers
and convey a message that men
have a role in preventing domestic
violence," said Sandy Oliva,
executive director, Nassau County
Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
Also participating in the cause
were Victor Green's wife, Esther,
and their daughter, Victoria.
If you or someone you know
needs help, please call: Nassau (516)
