Bethpage US Open In Full Swinfg }
As early as 1993-94, members of the USGA executive staff started the
process to consider the Bethpage Black Course as a site for the US Open.
The USGA and New York State officials and the Department of Parks have
been working diligently to prepare for what promises to be a major event of
interest to golfers worldwide.
With the exception of the 18th hole, the course has been restored to the
original Tillinghast design. The clubhouse has been renovated and
expanded. Officials from the State and USGA have devoted innumerable
hours planning the logistics for accommodating the large galleries expected
to attend the Open daily.
Terry Clark, Director of Computer Services at Bethpage School District
and a member of the Bethpage US Open Committee, served as the Master of
Ceremonies at a reception for representatives of community organizations
hosted by Cablevision at their corporate headquarters in Bethpage. Terry
reported that the Bethpage web-site (www.bethpagecommunity.com) has
had inquiries about the US Open from as far away as China.
Jonathan Barker, Manager of the US Open 2002 who has been assigned
to Long Island for the past two years, gave a brief history of the USGA and
then described the plans that have been developed thus far...parking for
spectators and transportation for people traveling to the Open via the LIRR.
Close to 4,000 volunteers will be needed during the US Open
Championship. Each volunteer is asked to work a minimum of four^hifts (5
hours per shift) during the week of the Open Championship. Also, volunteers
are required to purchase the official volunteer uniform at wholesale price
(approximately $140). For this commitment, each volunteer will receive a
volunteer credential that will grant him or her admission for all seven days of
the Championship.
The US Open's largest committee, Merchandise, is comprised of 1000
volunteers. The USQA merchandise will be on display in a large tent that
closely compares in appearance to that of a major department store.
Volunteers are needed to work on cash registers, greet patrons as they enter
and assist the clothing manufacturers.
Information about the volunteer application forms will be published in
two weeks.
Tickets will be distributed through a lottery system. Applications for
tickets to the US Open 2002 will be accepted immediately after the US Open
2001 -June 18,2001.
Holding the US Open on a publicly owned golf course is a challenging
prospect for the USGA and local representatives from the government and
Farmingdale and Bethpage communities. It is an exciting time for Bethpage
and an opportunity to encourage government officials and corporate leaders
to join together to beautify the downtown area. fa Mary McCaffery
