Flying Like An Eagle
Bethpage Golden Eagles Win It All With A 29-28 Victory Over Amityville
^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^
Bethpage QB Matt Rewkowski (#91) dodges defenders.
Last week, the Bethpage High
School Golden Eagles football team
celebrated their 16-15 Nassau
County Class III Championship
victory over Glen Cove. The team
and the crowd at Hofstra Stadium
chanted Head Coach Howie Vogts'
name after he had become New York
State's all-time winningest coach,
with 288 victories. This week,
number 289 came and was every bit
the thriller and every bit as sweet as
last week's victory as Bethpage
outlasted Amityville 29-28 to capture
the Long Island Class III Title.
Quarterback Matt Rewkowski
once again led the way for the
Golden Eagles with a stellar
performance highlighted by 124
yards rushing, two rushing
touchdowns, one two point
conversion on a run and another on
a pass to Steve Bofill. Bofill opened
the scoring with an 8-yard rushing
touchdown of his own, but it was
Rewkowski's 24-yard touchdown run
to open the second half that tied the
score at 22, followed by Tim Garcia's
extra point kick that put Bethpage
ahead 23-22. Chris De Simone's 47-
yard touchdown run midway through
the fourth quarter proved to be the
game winner, as Bethpage increased
their lead to 29-22 and held on from
there.
Eugene Nottingham led
Amityville with 123 yards and two
touchdowns. His 52-yard touchdown
run late in the fourth quarter brought
Amityville to within one point, but on
the ensuing two-point rushing
attempt, Nottingham was stopped
short of the end zone by Bethpage's
Nick Bentivegna with help from
Craig Swanson.
The victory marked Bethpage's
third Long Island Championship. The
team won titles in 1993 and 1994.
Congratulations to the Golden
Eagles and Coach Vogts and his
staff for making Bethpage football
fans proud once again.
