Locks Of Love
Stylist holds Katelyn Wasserman's freshly cut ponytail as Katelyn
sports a brand new hairdo.
Kristen Amore shows off her new shorter style hairdo.
Several Schwarting and Packard
students and a Plainedge parent are
sporting considerably shorter hairdo's
this month after donating 8" of
their hair to make wigs for children
who have lost their hair.
After hearing about the program
called "Locks of Love" from a flyer
sent home by the Schwarting
Student Council, Lauren Murphy
and Katelyn Wasserman from
Schwarting School, Kristin Amore
and Mary Zen from Packard, and
parent Diane Roverto decided to
take the plunge. At least one of the
students was inspired by the illness
of a friend, and the other girls
because they wanted to help
children who were sick. They bravely
came to the Maximus Hair Salon in
Merrick on January 15, their day off
from school, where hair stylists
twisted their hair into a pony tail,
then cut and styled their new bob.
The hair salon provided the service
free of charge.
"Locks of Love," a not-for-profit
corporation that makes hairpieces for
children with medical hair loss, was
coordinated by Schwarting Student
Council Advisor Donna Pessah, a
one-woman dynamo who admits to
being "good on the phone." She
helped to get the word out around
the community, and worked with a
Schwarting teacher to enlist the
cooperation of the hair salon.
"We re fortunate to have such a
talented, dynamic, good-hearted
parent as one of the leaders of the
Student Council- She's a wonderful
role model tor children in
demonstrating the value of giving to
others," said Schwarting Principal

BETHPAGE STUDENT IS
NEW YORK STATE WINNER
IN VFW'S NATIONAL
"YOUTH ESSA Y" CONTEST
MCUOKAL
JUSTIN PINTUCCI (shown above), an eighth-grade student in
LaSalle Regional School in Bethpage, has been declared the first-place
winner in New York State in the VFW's National Youth Essay
Contest! So reports Bert Carlson, Past Post Commander and longtime
Chairman of Youth Essay and Voice of Democracy Programs of
Butehorn Brothers Post 4987, VFW
This is the first time in the history of this important VFW program
that a Bethpage student has won First Prize at the State level! Justin
is now competing with one winner from each State for the VFW's
National First Prize, which is a $10,000 U. S. Savings Bond!
There were almost 500 students from eight schools in the Bethpage
area participating in this year's Youth Essay Competition, which
is open to students from Fifth Grade up Justin, like many other
student participants, has entered the competition for several years
This year's theme, on which all students wrote their essays, was
"What Does It Mean To Be Patriotic?"
The program is an annual event, sponsored at the Post level by
Bethpage's Butehorn Brothers VFW Post 4987, and it coincides with
the perhaps better-known Voice of Democracy program
It is a truly remarkable achievement for any student to write an
essay considered to be the best among the many, many thousands
submitted state-wide, and the officers and members of Buiehom
Brothers Post 4987, Veterans of Foreign WArs of the U S., are prcud
that a Bethpage student, sponsored by our Post, has achieved this
high honor and is actually "Going for the Gold " Good luck Justir I
