Effective January 1, 2001,
Varicella (chickenpox) vaccine will
be required for ail children, one year
and older, entering any day care
program. As of January 1, 2003,
Varicella vaccine also will be
required for children entering
kindergarten or elementary school.
Chickenpox is a highly
communicable disease caused by
the Varicella virus. It is a common
childhood disease. Cases in healthy
children are usually mild. However,
chickenpox may be a very serious
disease, especially in young infants
and adults, and can lead to severe
skin infection, scars, pneumonia,
brain damage, or death.
Every year in the United States,
about 12,000 people are hospitalized
for chickenpox and 100 die of the
disease
The virus can be spread from
person to person through the an, or
by contact with fluid from chickenpox
blisters. A person who has had
chickenpox can get a painful rash,
shingles, years later.
According to the CDC (Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention),
most individuals who get chickenpox
vaccine will be protected from
getting chickenpox after being
exposed to the disease. But if those
who have been vaccinated do get the
disease, it is usually much milder.
They will have fewer spots, are less
likely to have a fever, and will
recover faster Immunity appears to
be long lasting One vaccination is
the current recommended dose
For more information regarding
immunizations, contact your health
care provider or the Nassau County
