Bethpage HS Hosts
Senior Citizens Prom
Bethpage Students Bridge the
Generation Gap
Bethpage Superintendent of Schools Harvey Hilburgh, Bethpage
High School Student Council President Laura Tattoli, Student Council
Faculty Advisor Wendy Way, and Director of the Bethpage Senior
Citizens Club Helen Berghmans at the Senior Citizens Prom held at
Bethpage High School.
As part of Newsday's "Bridging the Gap" program, members of
Bethpage High School's Student Civic Association have been meeting
with senior citizens in the "Young at Heart" group at St. Martin of
Tours church once a month, working on arts and crafts and sharing
experiences. Pictured here, students take some tips from one of their
senior friends on how to create decorative flowers from tissue paper.
"This program brings generations together," said Jacqueline Jill-Rito,
Bethpage High School's Student Civic Association Advisor. "Despite
the many years that separate them, both the students and seniors are
having fun and learning a lot about each other. It's been very
rewarding for both groups.'
Bethpage PTAs Endorse
School Budget

Over 250 senior citizens from the
Bethpage community attended the
annual Senior Citizens Prom held in
the Bethpage High School
gymnasium on Sunday, April 29
This marks the tenth consecutive
year the Bethpage High School
Student Council has coordinated this
event
I he theme of this year's prom
was A Night in Paradise " Individual
Polaroid pictures were taken of the
seniors wearing Hawaiian lets
Student Council members decorated
ihe gymnasium, and prepared and
served food and refreshments A DJ
and the school s Jazz Baud provided
the musical entertainment,
"This is a fantastic event," said
Helen Berghmans, Director of the
Bethpage Senior Citizens Club "I
remember the first year they held
this, only 30 seniors showed up This
is a great turnout and we are
grateful for all of the hard work the
students put into making this day
special for us "

good time, the students get a lot out
of the prom " added Bethpage High
School Student Council President

opportunity to get to know senior
citizens in our community
Ail five PTA units ol the
Bethpage School District announced
last week that they are endorsing the
proposed 2001-2002 school budget.
The PTAs ol Bethpage High School,
John F. Kennedy Middle School,
Charles Campagne Elementary
School, Kramer Lane Elementary
School, and Central Boulevard
Elementary School pledged their
support after conducting
independent votes held subsequent
to budget presentations made by
Superintendent of Schools Harvey
Hilburgh and Assistant
Superintendent for Business
Michael Buzzeo
"As PTA members, we take a
great interest in our children
However we are also concerned
about our community's ability to
support the demanding new
instructional program that the
district is required to provide said
Bethpage Council of PTAs President
Mary Ellen Ginty After listening to
the budget presentations and
carefully reviewing the allocations
'or our schools a\\o all other areas ot
the budget, each PTA reported that
theii membership is convinced the
proposed budget is academically
sound and fiscally responsible The
Bethpage Council of PTAs
unanimously supports the proposed
2001-2002 school budget. We thank
the Board of Education and
administration for their diligence
during this changing climate in
public education "
Superintendent Hilburgh and the
Bethpage Board of Education
commended the PTAs for their input
into the budget process through site
based teams, their participation
throughout the year in school
activities, and their ongoing
commitment to the children of
Bethpage

so that they are equipped to meet
the challenges of higher learning
