Bethpage H.S. Team
Advances To Quarterfinals
Of the Long Island Challenge
Round Two action heats up for
schools battling to reach the next
level of The Long Island Challenge.
As cheers from their classmates
filled the television studio, students
from Bethpage High School
triumphed over Levittown's General
Douglas MacArthur High School in
Round Two. The victory qualifies the
Bethpage team to advance to the
Quarter Finals of the local question-and-
answer game show that tests
students' knowledge of math,
science, literature, news and Long
Island history.
Sponsored by Cablevision
Systems Corporation, News 12 Long
Island and Newsday, The Long
Island Challenge is the first televised
academic competition on Long
Island. Each week the show puts
high school students' academic skills
to the test as they compete for cash
prizes totaling more than $50,000 for
their schools. Sixty-four schools will
compete this year.
"By following the competition on
a weekly basis, the excitement builds
to see which team makes it into the
next round. The ultimate prize --
being named Long Island's best -- is
coveted by all the schools. We are
delighted to offer educational
stimulus to our local high school
students and are anxious to see the
outcome of future battles on The
Long Island Challenge," said Joan
Hendricks, area director of political
and community affairs, Cablevision.
Now in its fourth season, The
Long Island Challenge airs on News
12 Long Island on Saturdays and
Sundays at 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

The Bethpage Varsity Kickline
2000/2001 Golden Girls, once again
have won the LIKA Championships
placing 1st in Kick and 2nd in pom.
This year's team has worked very
hard to achieve this. They had a very
unsure beginning season as 9 new
girls were added to the team. They
had to create a sense of team unity,
which involves trust of each other to
work well together.
Through adversity they learned
strength, through trust they learned
team unity Through self discipline
they learned commitment as well as
dedication, focus and passion They
learned that passion combined with
lightning equals explosion of energy
and spirit they learned it is not
about the trophy but how you win the
trophy AbOUt personal best and
believing in yourself About positive
attitude and what an important part
it is in achieving your goal
We have had many injuries and
illnesses this yeai rhe girls also
learned what sacrifice is as lai nol
actively performing but by being a
part ot support from the sidelines, is
as important. Their spirit was
defiantly needed to help the girls
along. So yes...this year's team might
have started out slow and unsure
but the 2000/2001 Golden Girls
proved themselves not only at LIKA
Champs but at Scholastic Kickline
Champs as well. They placed 1st in
all 4 divisions including the overall
category which was a first time event
for them.
As a coach of this team, I would
like to say to the girls Li/ and I are
very proud of each and every one of
you for your accomplishments and
for coming together as you did We
both agree on this: GOLDEN GIRLS
ARE FOREVER!!!!! And we are your
w1 fans"
I would like to thank our parents
and fans tor their outstanding
support throughout our season
Sincerely.
