OPENS NEW BUILDINGS

On Monday, November 19, New
Island Hospital opened two new
buildings that enlarged its patient
treatment areas by approximately
75%.
The hospital's expansion
includes the following: New
Emergency Room, Ambulatory
Surgery Center, Endoscopy Center
and a Surgical Suite of seven state-of-
the-art operating rooms and 36
new medical/surgical patient care
beds.
The new Emergency Room will
accommodate a significant increase
in patient visits while reducing
waiting and treatment time. There is
a "fast track" area for minor injuries
and dedicated examination rooms for
pediatrics and
obstetrics/gynecology. The
Emergency Room also has a
dedicated radiology area where film
is digitally processed and patients
no longer have to be transported to
the Radiology department for routine
x-rays. There is also a distinct
cardiac treatment area that will
permit rapid diagnosis of heart
related conditions.
The Surgical Suite has been
increased from four operating rooms
to a seven-room operating suite and
includes specialized orthopedic
operating rooms. In addition, the
recovery room has been expanded in
size and number from 8 to 10 patient
observation areas, designed around
a central nurse's station for ease in
monitoring.
The Ambulatory Surgery Center
has been doubled in size to meet the
increasing demand for outpatient
services, with a range of the newest
developments in same-day surgical
