County's First Autism Girls Gymnastics Team
Center Opens in Bethpage Defends Champion Title

To meet the growing needs of
autistic children, their families and
public school districts on Long Island
and in Queens, the North Shore-
Long Island Jewish (LIJ) Health
System has established Nassau
County's first Center for Autism,
centrally located in Bethpage in
eastern Nassau County.
"With an estimated 9,000 cases
of autism in Nassau, Suffolk and
Queens counties alone, the Center
for Autism has a critical mission to
fulfill," said North Shore-LIJ CEO
Michael Dowling. "Through generous
philanthropic and state support,
North Shore-LIJ will be able to
commit extensive medical resources
to address this complex, often-misunderstood
disorder."
Autism is a developmental
disability that begins in early
childhood and results in impaired
social interaction, communication
and behavioral functioning. While the
degree of severity varies widely,
people with autism have difficulty
understanding relationships and
emotions and sometimes display
inappropriate behaviors, such as
extreme reactions to minor changes,
unusual sensitivities to particular
sounds, sights or textures,
compulsive routines and repetitive
movements. Diagnosis of the
condition can be challenging, but it is
extremely important to later
functioning that it be made as early
as possible so that effective

2002 season
The Bethpage- Plainview Girls Gymnastics Team successfully
defended its championship and became the Nassau County Champions this
year!! The gymnasts had one of their toughest seasons. Many teams in
Nassau were very strong this season and looking to dethrone the 3 time
County Champions. The overall record was 8 wins and 1 loss. The team
suffered a tough loss to 2nd place Sewanhaka during the season. The loss
actually inspired the team to work harder, knowing their county title was now
in jeopardy. Another tough opponent was Farmingdale, who came very
close to beating our team in their dual meet. Led by 3 seniors- Co-Captains
Victoria Reese & Caralyn Vasquez, and Angie Shin, the team rallied to
come up with a plan for what was to be the toughest team championships in
our history. At the Nassau County Team Championships, Bethpage-
Plainview was trailing by 4.5 points behind Farmingdale and Sewanhaka
going into their final event, floor exercise. The gymnasts had to go out and
perform the best floor routines of their careers. They tumbled and danced
their way to an exciting first place finish.
Angie Shin led the team in enthusiasm and sportsmanship and will
be remembered by her teammates by her dedication. Angie has been a
