Bethpage Student Named to Bill McCabe Bethpage's
St. Patrick's Grand Marshal
Bethpage High School senior Craig Swanson is congratulated by
District Director for Health, Physical Education, and Athletics John
Franchi. Craig was named to the elite Nassau County "Golden 11"
squad, comprised of the top 11 academic achievers among Nassau
County high school football players, as selected by the Nassau chapter
of the National Football Foundation and the College Hall of Fame.
Craig, who plays offensive and defensive line for the Golden Eagles
varsity football team, maintains a 95 average in the classroom and
scored 1290 on the SAT. He is being courted by a number of Ivy League

Coach Vogts Honored

Bill McCabe, son of William and
Nora McCabe of Silver Mines,
Nenagh, County Tipperary, was born
and raised in the Bronx. Like so
many of his peers, Bill attended
elementary school in the Bronx and
then traveled to Manhattan to attend
Cathedral Boys High.
After a brief stint in the NYC
Sanitation Department and Transit
Police, Bill joined the New York City
Fire Department on July 1, 1942.
Bill married the "love of his life,"
Margaret McSweeney on May 18,
1946. They had seven children, five
of whom are still living...Peg Hobi,
Kevin, Eileen Bordt, Thomas and
Bill, Jr. Following the lead of several
other family members, Bill and Peg
moved their family to the country -
Bethpage, to be exact - to the home
they still occupy on Brenner Avenue.
It was a move they never regretted
or as Bill puts it: "How sweet it is -
still."
Bill is a proud member of the
community. He was very active in
raising funds to build St. Martin's
Elementary School. His daughter,
Peg, was in the first graduating
class. He has been a member of the
Holy Name Society for 53 years and
the Bethpage St. Patrick's Parade
Committee since the first parade
back in 1991.
Like many firemen, Bill is an
outstanding athlete. Except for a
recent illness, Bill, an octogenarian,
is a tough competitor on the
racquetbail court. Just ask one of his
younger opponents - anyone under
60 - that is.
Bethpage Golden Eagles varsity football head coach Howie Vogts
has been honored with the Don Snyder award for his lifetime
contribution to amateur football. Coach Vogts just completed his 48th
season as Bethpage Coach with a record of 286 wins, 108 losses, and 10
ties. He remains the winningest coach in New York State high school
football history, a milestone he achieved last season. He is pictured
here receiving congratulations from his players after reaching that
milestone last year. Last year, Coach Vogts led the Eagles to a Long
Island championship. This year, the team made it to the Nassau finals.
