VFWVOICEOF DEM0CRACY CONTEST
Bethpage High School and Eastplain School winners were
Wendell Cheung, Matt Competello, Steve Secchio, Christine
Riina, Joseph Reddington and Michael Mussillo. Kramer Lane winners were Jillian McBride, Kasandra
Maleszewska and Franki Valenti.
LaSalle School winners were 5th grade: Alexa Gold, Derek
Sanders and Emily Moratti. 6th grade: Jessica Shea, Robert
Harris and Thomas Viglietta. 7th grade: John Grillea, Stephanie
Chin and Jessica Mancuso. 8th grade: Michael Trapani, Brian
O'Reilly and Gina Chong.
The "Voice of Democracy" Audio
essay competition was started in
1946, sponsored by the National
Association of Broadcasters. It was
cosponsored by the Veterans of
Foreign Wars in the late 1950's and
taken over in 1961. The Veterans of
Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary
cosponsored the program in 1964.
The National program awards at the
beginning were: 4 Awards of $500
Savings bond and a wrist watch for
each winner. This year's awards at
National start with a $25,000
Scholarship and have a total of 57
Scholarships totaling $141,500.
The "Youth Essay Competition"
started in 1991 for 7th and 8th grade
students. The first years Award was
a $5,000 Savings Bond. This year it
has increased to a top award of a
$10,000 Savings Bond and a total of
20 awards for a total of $52,500.
The Post 4987 started the "Local
Youth Essay" in 1974 for the 5th
and 6th grade students. It is similar
to the National program but has
fewer requirements/limits. This
program has been very successful
due to the Teachers and school
staff.
The "Teacher Recognition
Program" was started in 1999 as a
National Program and continues
today. The program is run in three
categories, K through 6th grade, 7th
and 8th grade and 9th through 12th
grade. In our first year of competition
we had 2 nominees from one school
in two categories. This year two
nominations, one in High School
and one in Eastplain School for K
through 5 grades.

Central Blvd. School winners were Kimberly Gartmayer, Alex
Mangano and Dessiree Pendleton.
Charles Campagne winners were Kyle Brown, Nicole
