VOL 42 NO. 12 April 16,2004 FORTY CENTS
Trench Rescue in Bethpage
On Monday April 12, 2004, the
Bethpage Volunteer Fire
Department responded to a trench
collapse in front of the old fire station
#4 on Stewart Ave. and Pine Ave.
The incident was called into the fire
dispatcher by fire district employee
John Dobreck at 10:44 am. A 51
year old male private contractor was
in the 12 ft. deep trench attempting
to disconnect the water service line
when a large slap of earth collapsed
onto him. The trench was not
shored up.
Bethpage assistant chief Greg
Patsos responded immediately in
Car 3 and became the incident
commander. The fire dept.
response included Ladder 3, rescue
9033, Engine 904, tactical rescue
9011, ALS ambulances 9046 and
9056. Chief Patsos requested
mutual aid from Syosset F.D.'s
tactical rescue team and the Sixth
Battalion technical rescue Team.
Hicksville sent an engine and
ambulance to standby at Bethpage
fire headquarters.
The trench was located in the
street at the curbline. The hole was
about 12 ft. long, 5 ft. wide and 12 ft.
deep. The Bethpage rescuers
quickly went into action shoring up
the trench with two panels of 4 by 8
plywood. A gas meter was employed
to test air quality; there were no toxic
gases and the oxygen content in
the hole was 20.6%. The patient
was placed on a backboard by ex-chief/
paramedic Frank DeBobes
who was quickly joined by the Entry
Team (Tim Wodicka, Tim Mooney
and James Cossaro). The patient
was placed in a stokes basket for
removal from the trench. A 4:1
mechanical advantage pulley
system was rigged up by firefighters
Ned Jensen and Rich Wylie. The
backhoe was used as the highpoint
for this pulley system. As the
Backup Team (Jim McBride, Rich
Wylie and Greg Patsos) stood by,
the patient was lifted out of the 12 ft.
hole at 11:08 am. This efficient
extrication process took only 15
minutes.
The conscious patient was
treated with oxygen and an
intravenous line by paramedic
Franco Callaci. The patient was then
transported in ambulance 9046 to
Nassau University Medical Center for
evaluation for potential crush injury.
There were no firefighter injuries
reported. A total of 34 firefighters
responded to this alarm. Mutual aid
units were cancelled enroute. This
operation was successfully
terminated at approximately 11:44
am. Assistant Chief Patsos thanked
everyone for their skillful and rapid
rescue of the trapped workman.
