Blizzard of 2006
WINTER FINALLY ARRIVES
// scons as though oT man winter has finally made his arrival this year.
This past weekend Bethpage and most of the northeast was hit with a powerful
winter nor'caster that brought with it high winds and in some areas over 2
feet of snow. While winter certainly waited quite a while to throw his first
punch it was a powerhouse of an uppercut that Long Islanders felt with the
Blizzard of 2006.
7his storm, however, did not come as a surprise to many since it was being
tracked and anticipated since midweek. The snow began late Saturday
evening and by early morning on Sunday it was stated that between 3 and 4
inches of snow were falling per hour. Extremely high winds made visibility
almost impossible and also created huge drifts of snow.
Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County road crews were diligently plowing
and sanding for nearly two days straight trying to clear paths on both
main streets ami secondary roadways. Their task was not an easy one as high
winds, rapid snowfall and frigid temperatures made plowing and clearing
extremely difficult. All in all a fine job was done by these sleepless crews who
braved the cold and the snow for what must have seemed like an endless
amount of hours.
Most oj the merchants along Broadway and Stewart Ave. were closed on
Sunday with the exception of some die-hard shops. Even Burger King on Old
Country Rd.was closed on Sunday morning and except for a car or two most
of the roadways were empty. It was obvious that most people listened to the
advice of newscasters who urged everyone to stay indoors unless absolutely
necessary.
The Tribune took a brief trip early on Sunday morning to see what was
going on downtown and the only thing happening was snow and lots of it.
Riding down Stewart Avenue visibility was down to about 150 feet and the
roads became icy and quite dangerous. Transportation by any means was a
problem. Our three area airports, Kennedy, EaGuardia and Newark had cancelled
collectively about 500 flights and on Sunday some passengers were
stranded on the Long
Island Railroad where trains got stuck on snow covered tracks.
Record snowfall was reported in New York City as Central Park reported
accumulations of 68 centimeters, which was the most accumulations since
record keeping started in 1869. The previous record was 67 centimeters in
1947.
On late Sunday afternoon the snow finally stopped and most of us took to
the job of digging ourselves out. The sound of humming snowblowers filled
the still air and slowly people began to emerge from their homes.
I am sure that by the time most residents receive this publication this
record snowfall will be nothing more than a memory as current predictions
indicate that by weeks end temperatures could hit 50 degrees. But don 7 get
too comfy or pack your shovel and boots away just yet. Reports also indicate
that we are in for some more cold temperatures by the weekend and who
knows if oT man winter will be making a return trip and leaving some more
snow for us all to deal with in the near future.
