Homeland Security Center Comes to Bethpage
Senator Dean Skelos joined by the
NYS Senate Delegation, Legislator
Edward P. Mangano, Northrop
Grumman Sector VP Duke Dufresne
and Long Island Forum for
Technology (LIFT) President Ken
Morrelly announced the New York
State Homeland Security Center of
Excellence will be located on the former
United States Navy Property.
The Center will be constructed
with 21.1 million dollars in funds
secured by the New York State
Senate Long Island Delegation. The
project requires approximately five
acres of land which will be provided
by the US Navy and Nassau County.
The building is estimated at 65,000
square feet, providing space for twenty
corporate tenants. The project will
be constructed on the former Navy
Property and is tentatively sited for
the corner of Cherry Ave Extension
and South Oyster Bay Road.
The Homeland Security Center
will be managed by LIFT. The center
will enable companies and research
institutions to collaborate, deelop,
test, evaluate and deploy new homeland
security technologies and systems,
such as those needed to detect,
prevent and respond to terrorist
attacks or natural disasters. The purpose
of the center is to focus and
accelerate the transfer of technology
into market driven products and systems
to solve key problems in protecting
our society against terrorist
events through collaboration with
industry leaders, increased communication
with the Department of
Homeland Defense and effective use
of future grants for research and
development.
Northrop Grumman will make
cash and in-kind investments totaling
$15 Million over the next ten years
and serve as the Center's anchor tenant.
The investment includes hardware,
software, equipment, staff, university
research and prototype testing.
Tenants are expected to collaborate
and make similar investments.
The concept is similar to the
Small Business High Technology
Incubator located at Briarcliffe
College, which is managed by Long
Island Software Network (LISTnet)
and focuses on assisting small business
in the field of technology. The
Center for Excellence is on a larger
scale and will seek to assist companies
develop and grow in the homeland
security sector. It is estimated
that the center will create or retain
290 research jobs locally and 2,160
product development jobs. Jobs that
will be indirectly created by the center
are estimated at 7,350, for a total
of 9,800 jobs throughout the state.
Senator Dean Skelos said, "This
historic initiative will create an environment
for innovation that will lead
new technologies and products
designed to keep us safe. The Center
will position Long Island as a global
leader in the homeland security
field." Senator Kemp Hannon said,

located in the 6t n Senatorial District,
in Bethpage". Senator Marcellino
commented this "...is a win-win for
Long Island..." Legislator Ed
Mangano said, He is "thrilled with
this type of reuse for the former Navy

security efforts". Legislator
