A Fitting Tribute to Our Fallen Heroes
Our flag waves proudly. Wreaths were placed in honor of those Veterans who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Dressed in their finest patriotic attire and waving American flags,
Bethpage residents lined the streets of our community in respect and remembrance
of the heroes which we salute and pay homage to on Memorial Day.
This year's parade was the largest parade that Bethpage residents have been
treated to in a long time and Mother Nature was in full cooperation with the
day's activities.
The day began with a religious service at 8:00 am at St. Martin of Tours
Church, officiated by Father Tizio. Shortly afterwards community groups,
children's groups and various Veteran and fraternal organizations gathered to
take part in this annual Bethpage tradition.
This year's parade, which was sponsored, by the American Legion,
Veteran of Foreign Wars, American Legion Auxiliary, Bethpage Fire
Department, Bethpage Fire Department Auxiliary and the Bethpage Board of
Education began with the Nassau County Mounted Police and finished with
an impressive line up of historical and classic cars. In between spectators
viewed many local organizations, religious groups, girl scouts and Boy Scout
organizations, nursery schools, sporting groups and Bethpage Fire
Department. Each group marched to the talented music of various bands from
the Bethpage School District.
The parade made its way to the Bethpage Community Park where residents
and parade organizers gathered to pat tribute to our fallen heroes and
place memorial wreaths by the monuments located in the park. The
Memorial Service took place at approximately 11:00 as Memorial Day
Parade Chairman Vito DeFanis called the crowd to order. Officer of the Day,
Commander Sal Auletta officiated the ceremony as Boy Scout Raymond
Swierkowki and Girl Scout Elizabeth Backman raised the flag. Our National
Anthem was sung followed by a moving and wonderful invocation by
Reverend Sal Bennardo of Assembly of God Church. Sergeant. Major
Udelfonzo then spoke to the crowd of how important it is to remember our
fallen heroes as well as to pray for those who are serving our country near
and far as it is those service men and women who afford us the freedoms we
cherish today.
Guest speak for this year's ceremony was Legislator Edward Mangano
who reminded everyone that freedom is not free and that the sacrifices that
our soldiers have made for our country is something that we all must make
sure to never forget or take for granted. He went on to pay a special tribute
for all to the families of servicemen and women who also serve as they wait
for their loved ones to return. He then went on to explain the significance
and meaning of the 12 steps in folding the American Flag. This was a story
that he was given by a person near and dear to his heart and the heart of so
many in Bethpage...Joan Poppe. Although Joan is no longer with us she is
always in our hearts.
It was after all of the guest speakers that various organizations and community
groups and leaders placed wreaths. The names of the Bethpage
Veterans who gave their lives for their country were read.
