BHS Class of 1976 Celebrates Reunion
The year was 1976 and our country was celebrating it's bicentennial. Tony Dorsett won the Heisman Trophy and Saturday Night by the Bay City Rollers was
at the top of the music charts. People flocked to the movies to see Jack Nicholson in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and others were glued to their televisions
watching Fonzi on Happy Days. It was the year the Ink Jet Printer was invented and gas prices didn't even cost 75 cents a gallon.
1976 was also a momentous year for the fine folks in the picture above as each of them celebrated the milestone of graduating from Bethpage High School.
Thirty- years later these BHS grads came together to celebrate their Reunion on Saturday, August 12 at Sheraton Hotel in Smithtown. Take a look through this
photo and see how many familiar faces you can spot? The Tribune will check back with them in 10 years to see the class of 76 celebrating their
40t h . Congrats to all!
A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned at CBS School
One million. Now that is a large and impressive number. But how many of
us can actually visualize what one million of anything looks like? The students
at Central Blvd. School will be finding out shortly as they engage in a unique
and wonderful project that will teach them not only what one million looks like
but also just how each of them can make a difference in the world around them.
Ms. Deborah Deasy, a fifth grade teacher at Central Boulevard School, suggested
a project to Mr. Furrey and to the Central Boulevard faculty at their first
faculty meeting this year. Mr. David Schwartz, the author of the book How
Much Is a Million will be their guest author in May. This book will be celebrating
its 20m anniversary in print. Mr. Furrey and the entire faculty and staff
embraced Ms. Deasy's suggestion for a school project.
All of the students in grades K-5 at Central Boulevard will be participating
in the "How Much Is a Million Penny Drive". Students will be collecting
pennies from their family, friends and neighbors as part of this worthwhile
project. The pennies will then be counted, put into large bins and displayed so
that students can see the fruit of their efforts as well as chart their progress.
Collecting 1,000,000 pennies is not an easy task and will require a lot
of participation and help by students, faculty and parents. At the end of all this
penny pinching the children will have raised $10,000, which they intend to
divide up and donate to various charities that do research on curing illnesses that
particularly affect children.
This wonderful effort is a lesson not only in math and counting but also in
compassion and caring. By collecting pennies the children at CBS will be taught
that each of them can make an impact on the world around them...even if it is
one penny at a time!
Now here is where we all can help. GOT PENNIES??? If you do gather them
up and drop them off at Central Boulevard School. There is no need to count
them as the students will count them. The school is located on Central
Boulevard in Bethpage. If you have any questions about dropping off your pennies
you may call the school at 644-4300 and leave a message for Ms. Deasy.
You may also drop pennies off at the Bethpage Tribune office, which is located
at 329 Broadway in Bethpage. So start rjagging up those pennies everyone and
drop them off at CBS where a penny saved is a penny earned and a penny earned
will make a difference in the life of a child!
