Bethpage Schools' Staff and Emergency Responders
Honored for Heroics
The Liberty Award was presented to a group of seven Bethpage school staffers, Bethpage Fire Dept. members and a Nassau Police Officer who
came to the aid of Leah Olverd. Pictured (L-R) Liberty Award recipients Nassau County Police Officer Alfred Troisi, former Bethpage Fire
Chief/Paramedic Frank DeBobes, and Bethpage Fire Department 2nd Assistant Chief Dale Schultz being congratulated by State Senator Carl
Marcellino, David Olverd, Leah Olverd, Claudia Olverd, and State Senator Kemp Hannon, with award recipients Volleyball coach and physical
education teacher Anne DiPrima, and physical education teachers Debbie Rut, Cheryl Van Syckle, and Chrissy Bennett.
Four current and former members of the Bethpage High School
staff, as well as three emergency responders recently received the
New York State Liberty Award for their fast-thinking and lifesaving
efforts. State Senators Carl Marcellino and Kemp Hannon presented
the awards to the honorees for their roles in helping to save the life of
Bethpage High School sophomore Leah Olverd.
Back in August 2006, Leah was with the Volleyball team during
try outs in the Bethpage High School gymnasium. Volleyball coach
and JFK Middle School physical education teacher Anne DiPrima
was there, along with physical education teachers Debbie Rut and
Chrissy Bennett, as well as retired physical education teacher Cheryl
Van Syckle. Suddenly, Leah fell to the floor.
"Someone screamed my name and 1 looked down on the floor to
see Leah," said Ms. DiPrima. "It looked as if she was going into a
seizure. She wasn't breathing."
Ms. DiPrima immediately began administering rescue breathing.
Ms. Bennett, Ms. Van Syckle, and Ms. Rut called the fire department,
retrieved the school's Automatic External Defibrillator and monitored
Leah's pulse as efforts were underway. Minutes later Bethpage Fire
Department 2ncl Assistant Chief Dale Schultz, former
Chief/Paramedic Frank DeBobes and Nassau County Police Officer
Alfred Troisi arrived on the scene. At that point, Chief Schultz took
over defibrillation and Leah was brought back to consciousness.
Ms. DiPrima, Ms. Bennett, Ms. Rut, Ms. Van Syckle, Chief
Schultz, Chief DeBobes and Officer Troisi all received Liberty
medals from the senators. Leah and parents Claudia and David were
also on hand for a brief award ceremony, held in the Bethpage High
School Little Theater. Leah's teammates on the Volleyball team were
also in the audience, along with Bethpage Board of Education
President Mike Kelly, Vice President Tom Frost and Superintendent
of Schools Dr. Richard Marsh, to applaud the efforts of these life-savers
and to welcome Leah back.
"God*. -;rks m Grange ways," added Ms. DiPrima. "It's a good
thing Leah was surroundeS oy people when this happened, and not
alone or asleep. We are all thankful to have her here with us."
