Students Meet the Superintendent
Bethpage School Chief Conducts Roundtable with Middle and High School Students
Bethpage Superintendent of Schools Dr. Richard S. Marsh conducted a
Student/Superintendent Roundtable Discussion with middle and high school
students in the Bethpage High School conference room, which he described as
"valuable."
Bethpage Superintendent of Schools Dr. Richard Marsh recently conducted
a Student/Superintendent Roundtable Discussion with students representing
JFK Middle School and Bethpage High School. The group consisted of 10
students, with every grade level from 8-12 represented by two students. The
discussion was held after school in the Principal's conference room at
Bethpage High School.
Following introductions, Dr. Marsh asked the students what they liked
most about their school experiences in Bethpage, and how it could be
improved, including additional programs and activities they felt should be
considered.
"It was clear from our discussion that our students are very pleased with
the wide selection of courses, extracurricular activities, and sports that are
made available both in the High School and Middle School," said Dr. Marsh.
"Of particular note, students applauded the expanded selection of Advanced
Placement (AP) courses being offered and specialized electives such as those
in Biotechnology."
Dr. Marsh also indicated that students expressed a strong desire for additional
AP course offerings in future years and asked that the District consider
foreign language courses in elementary school, perhaps in Chinese and
Japanese, to better help prepare children for careers in the years ahead. The
Senior Seminar in the High School, which prepares students for the college
search, selection and application process, was also highly touted, and it was
recommended that a Junior Seminar (or similar mentoring program) be considered
to help students get an even greater head start.
The 10 students who participated were: Lindsay Cafiero (Gr. 8), Colin
Chadderton (Gr. 10), Simon Jambrone (Gr. 9), Courtney LaSpina (Gr. 12),
Jared Marchitto (Gr. 8), Danielle Mole (Gr. 11), Anchal Sabharwal (Gr. 10),
Ryan Selock (Gr. 11), Julianne Tierney (Gr. 9), and Ike Yom (Gr.12).
"This was a valuable discussion that provided me with great insight from
the students' perspective," added Dr. Marsh. "Students are our clients and any
successful business understands how important it is to listen to their customers'
needs."
Due to the importance and value of this Roundtable Discussion for both
the Superintendent and students, Dr. Marsh is planning to schedule similar
meetings in the future.

Get Ready to Relay Bethpage
It is so hard to believe that plans are underway for Bethpage's 2nd Relay
for Life. Last year, the amazing community of Bethpage raised over $130,000
for the American Cancer Society, which was a truly unbelievable accomplishment
forour first year of Relay. If you were not part of this wonderful event
then you are encouraged to get involved this year because you can truly
make a difference in the lives of those afflicted with cancer, as well as provide
support for those who have lost loved ones to this dreaded disease.
The 2008 Relay for Life Kickoff reception will be held on February 27 at
7pm at the JFK Middle School Cafeteria. Come and enjoy an evening of
inspirational speakers, live music and an explanation of what Relay is all
about. Team captain packets and team sign up information will be available
although team registration can be completed on line by visiting
www.events.cancer.org/rflbethpageny.
It would be impossible to explain what last year's Relay for Life was like.
The faces of survivors and caregivers walking around the Bethpage High
School track to the thunderous applause of thousands of spectators was something
that no one could ever forget. And the fact that this entire community
came together to make a difference in the lives of others was nothing short of
inspirational. Students, residents, friends, neighbors, administrators, local
businesses and organizations all joined forces. The overnight event was a
wonderful example of why this community is so special and unique. It highlighted
the best of the best!
So this year, GET INVOLVED. We all have busy lives filled with work
and family obligations. Sadly however, cancer doesn't care how busy we are.
Cancer doesn't stop and take a break. It has no prejudice and has affected sgp
many families in our community and everywhere. Now is the time for *
Bethpage to shine once again and make our second RELAY even better than
our first one. Together we can and should make a difference.
The date for our 2nd Annual Relay for Life is May 31, 2008. Please mark
your calendar and be a part of something you will never forget. We also urge
you to attend our kickoff on Feb. 27. For information contact Judy Wichtei *
