Assemblyman James Conte Sponsors
Blood Drive Honoring Firefighter
Brian Fitzwilliam
On May 8, 2008 at Bethpage Fire Department, Assemblyman James
Conte is sponsoring a Blood Drive in conjunction with New York
Blood Services honoring Firefighter Brian Fitzwilliam. Firefighter
Brian Fitzwilliam is a 23 year old volunteer firefighter with the
Bethpage Fire Department. Brian has been diagnosed with cancer, and
may need a bone marrow transplant as part of his treatment. As part of
the blood drive, the Bethpage Fire Department is asking that donors
participate in Bone Marrow Screening. The screening involves a donor
questionnaire, and either a quick swab of the mouth or a small sample
of blood from your donation. You can be tested as a bone marrow
donor without donating blood.
Brian and his family combined have been volunteering in the
Bethpage Fire Department for almost 100 years. Brian's father John is
an ex-chief and member of Engine Company 5, his mother Jackie is a
past president of the Ladies Auxiliary, his brother John is a member of
Engine Company 5, his cousin Chris Piegari is also a member of
engine Company five, and his uncles Joseph and Patrick Piegari are
both former members of Engine Company 5. Brian's family continues
to protect our communities as his father John is an Inspector for the
Nassau County Police Department, his brother John is a Firefighter
with the FDNY, and his cousin Chris is currently serving in the US
Army stationed in Iraq.
The blood drive will be held on Thursday May 8, 2008 between the
hours of 2pm and 9pm at the Bethpage Fire Department Station 4 located
at 991 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage. REfreshments will served and
raffles will be include New York Mets tickets and LI Ducks baskets
with your choice of game tickets. Please come down and help us help
Brian and others in need of blood transfusions and bone marrow donations.
It's Time to
"Get Your Purple" On
Bethpage
With Bethpage's Second Annual Relay for Life quickly approaching
it's time for Bethpage to TURN ON THE PURPLE. For those of
you who are not familiar with Relay for Life it is a fantastic overnight
event which is held at Bethpage High School and raises funds to treat,
fight and help those dealing with cancer. It's emotional...it's successful
and it does make such a difference.
Beginning Thursday. May 1 residents and business owners are
asked to decorate their home and businesses in Relay for Life
PURPLE. Last year our wonderful community raised over $130,000
for the fight against cancer and this year we are hoping to break that
record. This is a special community. When we unite and come together
we get things done. And so we are asking everyone to TURN THIS
TOWN PURPLE
The Bethpage Chamber of Commerce is getting into the spirit
and very soon residents will see a whole lot of purple creeping down
Broadway. In fact the Chamber challenges its members and business
owners to start decorating. Perhaps some purple ribbon or a string or
two of purple lights. Maybe a sign drawn in purple or displaying some
purple merchandise in the window. Whatever your idea just make it
purple in honor of this wonderful event, which will be taking place at
Bethpage High School on May 31.
And of course, we need our wonderful residents to take part in
"Painting the Town Purple" as well. Decorate your home in any way
you choose, get the kids involved by having them make posters or cutting
out purple decorations. Be creative...and be PURPLE!! Make
your house the most PURPLE house on the block!
Once you have decorated your home take a photo and email it to
bethpagerelay@yahoo.com by May 15, 2008. The winner of this fun
contest will be announced at Relay for Life. So get going Bethpage...
and get going PURPLE!
