Last weekend, the Dignity
Memorial Vietnam Wall came to the
Sears Plaza in a 3/4 replica of the
actual Vietname Memorial in
Washington, D.C. Dignity Memorial
and the Town of Oyster Bay sponsored
the Travelling Wall Experience.
Local 7 Carpenters Union assembled
the Wall and Town workers and volunteers
transformed the Sears Plaza
parking lot into a memorial park worthy
of the overpowering monument.
The Memorial Wall was open to
the public 24 hours a day, June 6, 7
and 8 and despite the extremely hot
weather, people came each day and
night escorted by volunteers from the
Vietnam Veterans of America, Nassau
County chapter #82, to places on the
Wall to find friends and relatives
among the 58,000 names inscribed.
During the 3-day exhibit, the
Town of Oyster Bay conducted various
ceremonies including the reading
of the names of the 80 who gave their
lives from the Town of Oyster Bay,
the lighting of the candles and the
ying of the wreaths. -
