The Signing of the Deed
Nassau County Takes Ownership of Navy Property in Bethpage
It was a great day for the community
of Bethpage and for Nassau
County as County Executive Tom
Suozzi signed a deed for the 105
acres of Navy property which is now
owned by Nassau County. On hand
for this momentous occasion were
Town Supervisor John Venditto,
Navy Representative Captain William
Cords, and Nassau County Legislator
Ed Mangano, who has been especially
hands on with this project.
This vast property which is located
on the former Grumman site is a
unique opportunity for Nassau
County, as the process begins to
obtain RFP (Requests for Proposals)
from potential buys. This means a lot
to the community of Bethpage who
for years has met and discussed what
they want to see at this site and what
they are opposed to. After years of
meetings, sketches and proposals the
community spoke and was opposed
to any additional housing. They were
seeking clean high tech businesses as
well as recreational space for the
community to enjoy. And that is
exactly what the County is hoping to
see take place.
Already in the works is a plan with
the Town and County to carve out
open space for athletic uses as well as
space which will be given to the
Bethpage Fire Department. As
prospective bids return these proposals
would be reviewed by Nassau
Count) and the development plan
will be subject to Town of < )yster

Last week s deed signing was certainly
a historic moment and begins
the process of whal we hope will

planned business area as well as
much needed tax relief for our residents.
Increasing our tax base in this
manner will also lessen the burden on
our school district and each and every
taxpayer.

On hand at this historic deed signing were To if Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto, County Executive
Thomas Suozzi, Legislator Edward Mangano and Captain William Cords from the US Navy
community of Bethpage who
formed a citizen's advisory and
planning group. Their input as
well as many letters of recommendation
was what Nassau
County officials listened to and
intend to listen to as the development
unfolds in the coming years.
"With the downsizing of the
defense industry, Bethpage was
faced a multitude of problems,
suited Legislator Ed Mangano.
Over 20,000 jobs were lost and
nearly 100 store fronts were left
vacant. Most alarming, was the
fact that in addition to the economic
impact we were faced with
contamination issues as well. I an
elated to report that today this
property is generating more tax
revenue than before and that
15,000 jobs have already been
restored. Remediation has taken
place and the property is being
cleaned up. This further development
means so much to our community
and I am thrilled about
this wonderful opportunity. The
entire community of Bethpage
should be very proud of this
accomplishment. Throughout
this entire process they never
lost their dedication and enthusiasm
in seeing the redevelopment
of this property come to fruition.
It has definitely been a community
effort."
Some of the community members who were extremely active informing a
community advisory committee were on hand for this historic moment.
