Mayor Cyril C. Ryan announced
today the Village Board planned
to appeal from the action of the
District and Division Army Engin-eers
in disapproving of the pro-posed
improvements in local water-ways
on which a hearing was held
on Oct. 3, 1946.

Under certain conditions this time
meeting voted to place all Muni-cipal
employees on a five-day week

made not to Interfere with the

E&cal authorities applied to the
War Department for improvements,
under the Rivers and Harbors act,
of Mllburn Creek, Swift Creek and
adjacent bays and channels. It
was proposed to dredge channels

-Swift Greek,-from iong <Jreek to
Randall Bay, and in Baldwin
(Freeport) Bay along-the existing
shore line channel, to the mouth
of Milburn Creek, and the exten-sion
of Little Swift Creek Chan-nel
across the tidal flats to con-nect
with Baldwin Bay.
The purpose of these requests
was to provide ready access to
Freeport for sports and commercial
fishermen, the elimination of the
pollution of the waterways around
Freeport and possibly to obtain fill
r the development of the south-
;i part of the village. However,
''the report of the district engineer
read:
"The District and Division En-gineers
find that there appears lit-tle
need for the improvement of
- these channels in Milburn Creek,
Little Swift Creek, Baldwin Bay,
Hudson Channel or other adjacent
channels for the accommodation of
heavy freight traffic. The reporting
officers further find that in view
of the relatively high cost of im-provement
and.1 the fact these
waters constitute tributaries to in-terior
channel to Long Creek from
the Long Beach Loop Causeway
Bridge to the head of Navigation
in Freeport Creek, which is to be
dredged arid, maintained by local
interests under the provisions of
•local co-operation for the recently
authorized project for Jones Inlet,
Federal participation is not con-sidered
warranted."
The appeal probably will be based
on the fact that the application
was not made with a view to pro-viding
accommodations for heavy-
. freight traffic, but under the pro-vision
in the Rivers and Harbors
act of 1946 permitting the granting
of funds for improvements making
the waters -navigatable for sports
fishing and other purposes. Con-gressman
Leonard W. Hall was in-
^strumental in having provisions for
Sthe Freeport project included in
the act. He did so after Mayor
Cyril C. Ryan appealed to him to
do so.

Mr. Carpenter stated that "this
board, as every member is aware,

of equal privileges for the
members of all departments in
Municipal government."
Mr. Trenchard. 288 Rutland rd..

a 5d-a'crc farm at LaGrange-ville,
near Poughkeepsie, about 60
miles from New York. It consists
largely of orchards, containing 1,000
apple trees, 500 peach trees, in
addition to other varieties. Later
Mr. Trenchard plans to introduce
the poultry line.
Management of the farm is to
be in the hands of George ^Trench-ard.

Farmingdale. The Trenchards plan
to move up-State about that time,
after which the head of the family
will continue to commute to his

Observances in Local Churches
Next Sunday is to be observed as All-Out-to-Church Sunday
by the Freeport Inter-faith Clergy Council. And those sponsoring
the movement hope residents of the community will make it a point
to attend service in the churches1^
of their cholqe and that the edifices ]
of the various denominations tyill
be filled to capacity. Temple B'nai
Israel will have its observance Fri-day
night. r
Mayor Cyril C, Ryan this week
issued a proclamation urgjng the
people to go to church on Sunday.
It reads:
"Whereas, we have need in our
community as in every town, city
and village in our great country
for worship and communion with

body, the Inter-Faith Clergy

the Village Board in casting about
for a lawyer to nil (he. vacancy
on the board, selected Mr. Maislen
who agreed to accept the appoint-ment.
A year after Mr. Maislen came
to Freeport, at the request of Post-master
Edward A. Rice, he accept-ed
the chairmanship of the March
of Dimes and conducted a success-ful
campaign. He has been presi-dent
of Temple B'nai Israel for
three and a half years, during
which the temple has been prac-tically
done over, the school prop-erty
adjoining has been acquired,
the mortgage has been cleared off,
all at a cost of about $40,000, and
the congregation is in the best
financial condition In its history.
And the membership has been in-creased
from 160 to 350.
Mr. Maislen has been chairman
of the- United Jewish Appeal in
Preeport for thre£ years and re-cently
his committee raised $34.000.
He also was chairman of the Fed-eration

War Breaks Out

Politics and Other
Charges Hurled at
Very Lively Meeting
A "cold war" that promises lo

election campaign broke out be-tween
Walter J. Wood and the
other members of the Village Board
at a special meeting in the Muni-cipal
Building. Accusations, denials
and charges of politics filled the
air and there were no signs of a
truce when a late adjournment
ended hostilities for the time being.
The first tilt was over the matter
of granting a five-day week for all
village employees. Horace F. Car-penter
introduced a resolution pro-viding
for the introduction of the
plan just as soon as department
heads can arrange the necessary
schedules for their staffs. Mr. Wood
thereupon presented a similar reso-lution,
i and read a letter he had
previously mailed to the Village
Clerk and members of the Board
in support of the plan, which was
almost identical with a statement
handed to the Nassau County

All-Out-to-Church Sunday was

Next Mayor Ryan acouae€t-.'rn-ua<~
tee Wood of circulating: a rumor
that the former Michael J. Coffey
property at Bedell and Archer sts..
was to be rezoned from Residence
A to Apartment status despite tin-fact
that a petition asking for
such a change was turned down
eight months ago and he knew the
same action would be taken if an-other
formal-application for tin
change came before the Board.
Mr. Wood denied circulating such
rumors. He said that when resi-dents
of the area .saw surveyors IT
work they came to him and in-quired
what it was all about. Hi
said he told them the Gramercy
Construction Co., which had ac-quired
the property, had filed map-and
asked that the 'plot be rezoned
to permit the construction of apart-ment
houses.
Mayor Ryan injected that people
also came to him with the same
question and he had assured them
the Board-had no idea of chang-ing
the status of the plot. Con-sequently,
he continued, the mem-bers
of the Board published an"
advertisment at their own expense
advising the public of this fact.
Mr. Wood signed this .statement, he
added, and then telephoned the
people "he had succeeded In In-ducing
the Board members to
change their mind."

This Mr. Wood emphatically de-nied,
contending that he merely
told them the Board had decided
