HE aeronaut. Sifuor Da- Costa, la a pleasant maii- iiercd mail whose uaiuf, when he la on the ground. Is very American, Indeed.
Jii; Ima "done Ihe pnmchulc" UOO
titnea. He Is not averse to talking about Ills adrenturco, and he has left
uie quite at liberty to publish any¬ thing that I have heard from hlui. He bas had many aocldi'iits. Uo
wns uiiconscl'ins last l-'oiirth of .Tuly wheu they picked hliu np out of the Ohio Hlver. He has come down on I fop of buildings aud telegraph wires I more tinies than lie can remember, and , once he wns tangled In the pai-acbnte I and enveloped In the balloon Itself In i tbe tfip of a big elm tree In Wlscon.'iiii, ; where he hung si'venty-Hvc feet from ] the ground for six hours before any I one happoncil along to got bim down. I Hut he says tbe worst "lix" that ho ever got liiio wus in Soiitlierii Wyom¬ ing, In a little town In Ureen Hivor Canon. .\iid be tells lllc story tbi.s ! way.
it was the wildest and most savage looking country I ever saw-all bare dirt mountains and granite crags, and iusty groascwood valleys and deserts, with no trace of living green to make a man think be is In a clvillzod land. It Is curious that when tbey Irrigate those gray, arid valleys tbey turn Into fertile flelds and gardens, Just like Ohio, where I was raised. That Is the way It is lu Green Itiver Canon. 'J'he pretty llltle valley, with pale green wlllowa along tbo sandy river, and the dark alfnlfii tieldt lie between those lonesome iiiils and cliffs like a gem In 11 rock.
I went out Iliere froii. Denver, on a good offer, lo ascend during a Septeui- bor festival. Tho valley was about three miles wide, and I calculated that tbe wind was aliout right Ihat aft.-r- noon to carry me over It and give mc 1 fair jump Into tbe alfalfa Holds or >ii tiic sandbars. Uut you can never foretell the wind in Wyoming.
Well, this time I was to make n plain parachute lea|> -without any can¬ non act or trapeze work, anil I meant lo iiinko » side leap, as I always do. In the side leap the lord Is fastened to Ibe side of tho balloon, nnd the weight of the man breaks it as be lumps off sidewlse from the bar. This leap generally tips the bnliooi, and lets the hot air out iiulckly, so that It will (lot drift far. The top ot the parachute IS always fastened to the balloon, to make it unfold right at the start.
I started to Inflate the bag that day wilh more than the ordinary crowd of helpers close about, for an ascension is a great thing in that country; tho Indians aud Mexicans, and mott of Iho cowboys, too, had never even seen I lialluou before.
'ibe bag grew blggoi'. Wlicii every- thing was ready I llxnl myself on the bar. cast the lines olt and shot np iwlflly. enjoying the astonlshiiient of Ihe wild crowd. I drew myself up nnd exociMed a few fiiiuy kicks In my scanty red costnino. You would be surprised to iind bow you can boar every litlie sound ^ ben in a balloon in nild-iilr. You can hear voices and conversation ilislinctly ut IIIKHI foot, and a shout loiiios np slarllingly strong. There was silence for a while as I wlilriod up above them, and then I heard a deep voice say. as 11' in my oar:
"What's llie fellow doing? Losing hit clothes'/"
1 glanced round behind inc. and .law with horror that Ibe poracliule wns training lotisoiy in the air b.'hlnd tbe bag. The top rope bad been cul or broken by some one lu tbe crowd, nnd Ihe thing was utterly useless In Ita up¬ side down mid disordered condition.
Now this was a terribly serious busl- ness. I always tnke the greatest care that the paiachiite is properly ar¬ ranged, ami I had taken care that time, but the mischief had been done at tbe last moment.
Tbere was nothing to do except cling to the bar aud lake tbe chances of be Ing killed when the air was cooled or exhausted nnd tbe balloon fell. 11 would como down with terrible veloc ity with uiy welgiit beneath il.
I glanced up at the big. swaying bag and ot Ihe murky, swirling, warm air In the inoutli of It. nnd then I looked dowu. I was about '.'00(1 feet up. Tbe gray horizon Roomed lo be rising all about lue. and the valley and ground liolow to be sinking like tbe bottom of a bow!.
The bnlloDii struck a strong ciirreui of nir when ll reached ;Iikkj foot, and I bad lo bold bard to tbo bar and llu- ropes. Instead of tho bieoie down the canon. wbUh I bad expeiled would carry me over tbe valley, I was in a directly opposite smilbwen w in.l which was bowling me along very fnsl. right over Ihe high rock walls of the oniion. I could see tbe black shadows lying along the sunlit slopes at their foot To tbe soulbenst (ireen lliver Canon lay with white and brown walls of rook rising from the gray val l..y of tagobush ami cactus, with tlu.' river shining among while saud nnd green willows, until It dUappcarod among peaks and liiittes. To the north there was nothing but a dr.'ary wilder¬ ness of bald, low mouulalus.
I felt lost ill thai air. for 1 bad never bi'en In ibe mouulalus before, and the sight of all thai savage scenery and Ibo thought of tlio hundreds of miles of it acared me more. In some way. than my real, iiumedlale danger of bring killed n lien tbe bnlioou sbonld fall.
But (be balloon kept biioyanlly on *.o the northeast, acting In a most ween- trie faihion. and I began lo watch It with won.ler. Wittt tno balloon partly over mc I was straining my eyes to see tbe bjt torn of the gorge, when there was a shriek of tearing cloth, a terrlflc slioik I was hurled against a smooth, baiil slope of rock and then flung out, to turn round in tbo air with bump aftei hump ogalnst the rock wall. This bo wllderlng.motion and my bruises near¬ ly took away my bobsos. ami It was several minutes before I could realize that I hnd struck a portimi of tho canon wall, on whicii the balloon bnd caught, and that my life was saved for Ibo present.
I struggled free from tbe tangled ro|ies and cloth and glanced down. Below me the rock fell in a perpendic- ulnr descent fur nt least UHK) feet, and at Its base was a sleep slope of snud, wilh ninssivo iionlib-rs Jutting out. Then llie ground fell nwny to the sage- bush carpeted valley and the rlv.i' course. In Iwo diroctions I saw the walls of tht canon going down to the same kind of a footiiig. but thoy were some distance b-.ck of me and liehind tbe crag where the balloon bung. I bad lodged on a iiafrow promontory.
As soon ns I uiMerslnod ibis I re¬ solved to crawl back to the main cllft and see wbnt cbniicos tbere were of scaling It, «n I worked iiiys<'lt up by the wreckage until I was on top nt the torn cloth, and there I saw a sight that made me sick wltb fear.
I stood on the very lop of n great pinnacle ot rock—one of those strange formations, so fnr as 1 know, that are found only in our Western deserts. There was no possible descent from It. Between mo nnd the real wail of the canon there was a gulf of .'KM) or -l(K) foot wide and at least (KH) foot In depth, where the shadow of Ibo walls uinde a bine gloom. Us top was not sl.^ty feet across, and was largely cov¬ ered by the wrecked balloon, which was flapping over tbe side nnd throw¬ ing fantastic siiadows on the eastern wall that curved about me.
.\nd bow the wind did blow: It was this that made nie do something. 1 crawled under a flapping part of tbo big cloth, for I was afraid that It would all bo torn loose and sail down the gorge.
AYbeii Ihe outer edge of the dolb would blow np and Hap I cnngbt glimpses of the dim blue walls uf the canon miles away, wltb yellow patcboa of sunlight here and there, and I bad to shut my eyes.
After wbnt seomeil hours I felt more composed and crawled out to lake an¬ other look. The coiipcr sun was al¬ ready behind the nearest cliff, and the wind had then dioil iiuito away.
I looked down tbe gulf and at the walls, and then walked to the outer side of Iho pinnailc. whore tbo lower¬ ing rock bnd scarcely a projecliou for Its entire dlstaiiio. The parachute bung there, and without any Idea In my mind 1 pulled it up and straight- one<I It along the rock to sec if it wns Injured.
Then, as I looked nt tbe blue dusk of Croon Klvor Canon I thought, "Why not Iry to tix the pnrncbuto niid drop Into tbe gulf, aud trust to luck to keep me from the wall nnd the rocks below."
Within .MXl feet that parachute would open. If It would opcu nt all. .\ night on that penk In lAe piercing cold would kill me. Tbe next day would bring no rescue.
But would Ibe parachute fly free? 1 gazed down tho crag, and then boldly clambered over on the cordage of tbe, balloon and bung above the canon. I thought the rock curved out slightly, but I could see no projection that might catch the canvas.
I clearod the balloon from the bnid rock and slretched the parachute along its round side, carefully noting every rope and knot, and then I slipped In¬ side tbe iron ring at the lower on.l. I walked back up Ibo slope, loi.k one long look at the murky distance of cast and west nnd the faint stars above, and then ran and Jumped high nnd far out over Ihe canon.
I hurtled down Ihrougli gloom, sinr- iiig straight up ot the sky through' agonizing seconds.
Then I felt a fliillor. tlieii a Jerk on one side, then a Jerk on the other, and I was slowly dropping down ihrougli a calm, warm dusk, with the protecting wings above wldosproad.
Down, (luielly as a f<>athor. Ihc parn- cliutc flnat«l roniiil tb'e base of the pinnacle, uiilll the earth came rising tlirougb the gloom 1 siruck a foot on Ibo flinty slope, and wont rolling, stum- I'liiig along, until I foil, twisted iu the . iiiivas, among the boulders.
I wandered anioiii' the rocks nil night, trying to keep warm, and when Ihe daylight came I nearly scared n sheep rancher lo death with my red Mannel lights and doublet. — Youtbj Companion.

I. Daniel praying (v. loi.
10. "When Daniel knew," etc. Dan. iol knew that the king's iMicts wer< irreversible. "Opeii-townrd Jorusa- lom " This wns not an act of super- stitlon. but a recognition of (JixI's promise to Solomon (1 Kings S:;k'i-44l. wbo had In his prayer al Ihe detllca- Hon of the temple entreatei! (iod to boar tho prayers of llio»o wbo might be In strange lands or In captivity when tbey slionld turn their faces to¬ ward their own land and clly and the temple. It ,vas an aid to tlio spirit of devotion. "Knrele-l." Compare 1 Kings 8:.->4; Elia II:.-.; Kpb. 3:14. Kneeling Is a fltling attitude for bum¬ ble prayer. "Tbr.'e times a day." See Psa. r.,'«:17. Tbe throo hours of prayer wero the same as the hours of sacrifli'e In tbe temple. ".\s he did aforetime." Ho did not swerve a hair's hreadth. He could have prayed In secret mid been hoard, but that course would have hei>n a public confession of want of failh In Cod and of yielding to the en¬ emy. Daniel simply went on bis dally pnth of life, as if no such order bad boon given. There was un lime when he iiooded lo pray more thau at this time.
11. Wlckoil mon plotting (vs. ILL'S).
II. "These men." The princes who had been plotting against Daniel. •".Vssoinblod." Han hastily, so aa to como upon Daniel suddenly and detect bin; in the act. They had hoard bis voice ond now rushed In upon hlm.
12. "I.rfiw—whicii altrretb not." It was quite common in ancient tinies to worship tho king. To alter the law would bo a ronfeasion of fulliliility, and nn abnigallon of goJlie.id.
l."l. "That Daniel." etc. Tbe aocns- era do not inoutlon tho high ollicial sta¬ tion of Daniel and his InHuiate ofllclnl relations with the king, but merely re¬ fer to his foreign birth In order that they may thereby bring Ills conduct under the suspicion ot being a political act of rebellion agnlnst the roynl au¬ thority. 14. "Soredisiiloasi'il." VoxihI nl thus iH'lng overreached; for ho saw Ihat It was nuinlty toward Daniel and uot ar.xioly for the maintenance of his authority which hnd le«l to the plot. "Labored." Endeavoring to flinl some way to evade tbe execution of the sen¬ tence. 15. "Know. O king." Their lone was masterful now, for Ihey felt able to compel the king lo work their will. Kings are the slaves of Iheir Hnllerers. 'ouese wicked men were i!elorinlned lo gel rid of the holy Dan¬ iel. Th,\v hated hlm.
III. Daniel among Ihe lions (vs. 10- LSl. KI. "They brought Daniel." Ac cording to Oriental cuslom the sen- leiici' was carried out on tho evening of the same day in which tho accusa¬ tion wns mnde. "Thy Cod—will de¬ liver." The heathen believed in tha Interposition of the gods in llniea of ;alaiulty. While' Unrius did not rec. ognlie Daniel's God as the Irue Uod, yet he wns ""n god," and Daniel's chnr¬ aoter waa such Hint the king believed bis (iod would deliver him. 17, "Sealed 11." Id the dnys when very few could road or wrilo signets wore nsed Instead of writing the natne. IS. 'Passea the night fasting." The soul
Of the pleasure-loving king was so slirred Ibat he bad no onre for food or ¦"loop. His grief was greatly Increased tiy bis consciousness that this evil i-anie from his own weakness nnd slii.
IV. Daniel's deliverance (vs. 19--J3I.
III. "Went In haste." A siraiigo spec- lade for a mouurcb of Ihe world thua lo be attending upon a condemned ser¬ vant of (iod. Yet the king had never •ppeared to such a good advantage.
20. "Lamentable voice." Deeply dls- Irosseil and In an ngony of anxlel.v. tip cried ont between hope nnd fear. "Servant of tho living Cod." Darlna liorrowetl this phrase from Daniel, (iod extorted from an idolntir h con¬ fession of tbo irulh. "Is thy Cod- able." Kull of ooncern, he trembles to ask the iiuostlon, fearing to be an- 5«ere,l with the roaring of the llonc after more pn'y. 21. "O king, live forever." The ,'oniinnn salutatiuii in addressing n king. Daniel might hnve Indulged lu nnger nt Ibe king, bnt did not. His sole thought whs that (lod'a glory had been sel forth in bis deliver- nnii'. 2'2. "Seut His angel." Dunlfl had company In the den of lions. Tliero was no inualo nor gladness In the pal¬ ace, bul celestial joy In the Intercourse belween Daniel and the angel In Hie den. Daniel lakes care to ascribe lila deliverance lo Ihc living <Jod, thnt Ue may not be confounded wllh the false gods of tho heathen. Ue speaks of the angel as (jod"s Iniitruinenf, not the aa- llior of bis deliveramo. "Shut Ihe linns' mouths." Angels bad held tho lions' Jaws and paws and made them peaceable compnnlons and hamileas aa doves. This was a new nnd wonderful experience for Daniel. Ho deligliled lo rointe il lo tbo king, whose voice be- trnyed bis agony. "Innocoiiey was found." Ky this wonderful .leiirer- .1I1CO Daniel learned how Cod estl- milled fnitlifiilness nnd how He Is pl,>asi>d In reward it. God had shown Dani.'l lliat Ills disobedience to a lieallieii king was not sin. He had been faithful In what he lielleved to be right, and In the test Ood declared bim iiinocenl by bis womlerful deliv¬ erance. ".No hurl" Daniel had been nilsri'preseiited before Ihe king as hav¬ ing evil designs against Ills Hiitborli)', but lo Ibe king himn'lf Daniel do- cinris he could not be guilty of auch designs when he wns faithful to his Co;.
