CRITICIZING THE FIREMEN You like to do it? I tbink that most | people do, and I koow that it ja quite j nataral, but I am again going to take | tbe liberty of calling to your attention some real facta about our firemen ans¬ wering a fira alarm. {
In tbe brat placa, many of our read¬ ers no not realiie that this service 'is all volunteer and that tbe firemen do ont receive ene cent of pay, and very aeldom a single word of thanks, bnt ara doing tbia work entire y for tbe benefit of tbe village at large. It ia also noticeable, tbat more tban balf of them are not taxpayera and conseq¬ uently bave no real financial interest at stake.
Take for inatance that fire at Mr. Greve's Sunday evening. I heard one bright yonng lady remark: "Goodness rakes' Wbat is tbe matter with tbe firemen? Will tbey never get here? They are as slow as molasses!" Now this young lady appeared iiitelligent, and was merely saying wbat lots of j otbers were saying, but as a matter ' of fact, the time made by the firemen : was nothing to be ashamed of. For instance, the Truck Co. No. 1. with I which I happened to be a little more j familiar; their bouse is on Church Street, north of tbe Merrick Road, and ! just one mile away from the fire. It took tbem 15 minutes to respond to the alarm, and in that time the memher of

Chief Cornell also brought up the matter of placing the old engine and hook and ladder truck in the huilding erected for them on the Village prop¬ erty at the power house. ' CRITICIZING THE FIREMEN You like to do it? I tbink that most people do, and I koow that it ja quite j nataral, but I am again going to take tbe liberty of calling to your attention some real facta about our firemen ans¬ wering a fira alarm. { In tbe brat placa, many of our read¬ ers no not realiie that this service 'is all volunteer and that tbe firemen do ont receive ene cent of pay, and very aeldom a single word of thanks, bnt ara doing tbia work entire y for tbe benefit of tbe village at large. It took tbem 15 minutes to respond to the alarm, and in that time the memher of Tickets for this I journed to tbe meeting rooms where domino, pinochle and pedro games were jthe Company bad to get dressed at «oon in progress. t^eir varioas homes, get to the Truck The winners in the varioos games House, get the horses out of the stables _.., "ere: Pinochle-First.
