Tiie action of the Village Hoard of Trustees in rescinding the verbal contracts with the Freeport Trolley Company, though long delayed, comen pretty close to being an ofiicial en doruement of the claim made in all these letters, viz., that the village has been furnishing power to this company for many months at a great daily loss We are glad that this leak is stopped,
.\i\ interesting question remains, It is this:
One local corporation l>as profited by all that the village has lost, and the change of rate of payment had for its source the complaint of the President of the Trolley Company to the efl'ect that his company was being over¬ charged. Now that we kmiw from the engineer's latest report shows that it coats the village rflore than two cents per k, w. to generate power and now that we know that one-half cent is only one quarter of two cents it appear.a that this company, to iirotect the vil¬ lage from loss, should have paid into the treasury at least four timvs as much m(mey as it has paid. Will the president of the other corpora, tion in¬ terested, viz,, the Village of Freeport, complain in any effective way to main¬ tain equity? There is by all reliable figures a wide margin, which in ethics and equity should be satisfied .Many will await with great inlereat the out¬ come of thi- ethical (irnbleo!,

Do We Need the Fire Alarm Improvement?
It seeiis tlmt fate is unusually kind j to .rh<- Freepori Fire Department, in ! various ways. Last Wednesd"y morn j ing then- was a call for alariii No. oB. j One.party v.'astold that the call was I No. 3, one company answered for call No. 73, and no two persons who heard j the alar-ii agreed as to the number i that was given, because nf tbe effect of the high wind carrying tne sound of ! the whistle. The Truck Company for iiisfanct' (1h-iiiil\ truci, in the village) Went Ul the eastern end of the village in answer to alarm No. 7:!. instead of to the soufhwe.-^t in answer to alarm ; No, ."ie. The alarm was sent in ctir- I rectly as No. 51!, and if there had been . a recording apparatus in the Power i House as the firemen ask you to vote I for al the election nexl Tuesday, there , would have been n<i trouble in reach- ! mg the tire, and what might have ': been several very valuable minutes j might have been saved, f his is no ! particular e,\ceprion, Tfa- firemen ! very seldom know where they are go- j ing when they start out, as they are i not sure that the alarm is correct, and ; for that rea.son this propoaition was jdeviaed, to prevanl this error as much i as possible.

At the meeting of the Village Board ; of Trustees Tuesday afteriioi.n. a reso- ' lution was passed rescinding lhe tem- [ porsry agreement by which the Free¬ p'irt Railroad ("o. aecured its power ; for trolley purposes af a minimum : rate MS noted before, and consequently putting the company back on upon meter rate. President Lamb, who is also an official of th.'Trolley Comnany. was interviewed after the meeting, and said that his company could not take the power from the Village of Freeport at the r.te that the meter indicated, and that they would make immediate arrangements to switch their service to the N, Y. & L, I Traction Company, as they had done previous to making the arrangt-ment !with the Village of Preeport.
Mr, Lamb further aaid that the com¬ pany had under consideration the prop¬ osition til erect their own power plant, ¦at the e.xtreme southern end o( ineir line, and thought that they would soon begin ooeratior.s, i>s they had th\ >dea ; tbat they i-niild secure puwer for run¬ ning and heating their cars cheaper in this way.

No. 3 appropriates $1000 for side¬ walks, the village to pay 1-8 of the cosl of not over 400 square feet to any one person during the year.
This is similar to the resolution passed every year, in varying amount". I.ast year the amount was $100<l, but there is a balance in the fund sc that $1000 is deemed adequate for t lii* year. No. 4 appro|iriates $.'100 for keeping the [lark around the depot ii! proper condition, and was the same amount as allowed lasl year. This is a godi) investment and money well spent

The Company vvill not be in a posi¬ tion financially the coming year to meel the additional expenses for the maintenance of the horses.
If this proposition is carried the money will be raised by direct tnxa- ; tion, as was the case for the motor tractor for the Hook & Ladder Com- . pany. Hence we are not including any interest on the amount invested, as It will all be paid for in the first year, and we consider this an a gift rather than an invent ment.

Thus we deem it imperative lliat we should no longer depend upon our neighbors bringing their h'lrses. As we only average about thirty firen a year, we coniider the mo'.or apparatus the most economical and serviceable. This proposition <v as a;iproved of by the Fire Council.
We ask V lU to connider thi,s proposi« tion fr V a business and taxpaver's standpn.. t und if you do, we feel con¬ fident <.f victory.
